Even if I were able to finish up my truck for a trip out west, I wouldn't be financially prepared for such an excursion.

Unfortunately I'm out this year. Moab 2014?

Sorry for being late on this! I need to get back on the board some more. Jason just told me about the thread.

I"M IN for Rubicon 2013! I have been wanting to do a big trip and this will be great.

Drew, if you are reading this; what are your thoughts on a RTT on an 80? I'm thinking i would not want that weight up top and may leave the RTT home. Also, i have an aussie out back but no front locker. I think i'll be fine with good spotting.

My thoughts for the trip are to drive out, wheel and ship it back and maybe either fly or catch a train back. I would really like to drive the entire trip, but i have a feeling i will need to get back to work, plus i'll be tired and the rig may not be driving straight after the rubicon.

PM inbound, glad you can join us.

Not sure if anyone is 100% definite on going, but not going to give up on the hope just yet...

Well, since Uncle Sam and our benefits are taking a bigger cut out of my paycheck, I doubt I am going to try and swing it this year. We shall see.

I've never been on a big trip. Doubt I can afford it. Just for my curiosity; what would a trip like this cost? (fuel mainly). I'm guessing you sleep in a tent/rig so there is no cost there. So.mainly fuel in a 12mpg truck.. I know some of you have done this and/or moab. I may save up, hell we have 5-6 months

save $100/month and there is at least $500 towards your fuel. I'm guessing $2,000 for the entire trip in fuel.

I've privately told one or two, but, I'm personally committed (not mentally, yet ), if it comes down to riding the Beemer, I'm going to CA this summer. I've got a national business conference in Vegas so I'm combining the two for a summer trip excuse...

A lot depends on your budget. I drove to Rubithon in '08 in the FJC with my daughters & Rubi (get where she got her name). I committed to it and enjoyed paying over $5/gal right before the trailhead in CA. I kept a spreadsheet on gas costs (I also went to other parts of CA to visit family, hit AZ, Moab and CO for the whole trip) and spent over $3000 just on gas.

We took 5 days driving, 4 nights (Nashville, KC, Fort Collins, W Wendover NV), we stayed in hotels. One could certainly make it in less time if they had a co-driver and slept @ rest stops, Walmarts, etc. We earned the "Iron Butt" award that year, driving from the furthest location. I could see how one could tag-team drive, do Rubithon in June, drive back in 14 days and enjoy themselves.

Doing the trip in an 80/60, where one can sleep inside, would make for a great expedition with the right mind set from NC to CA. In my opinion, so much depends on having the right mentality for such a trip. The key to success will be one's mindset once they get their wheels off the pavement. I drove it in the FJC knowing this was the beginning of an extended adventure and didn't want to leave on a trailer, taking a bus home. I was able to "clean" it (did it w/o pulling rope, no body damage or drivetrain damage) and had never challenged myself so hard in not taking the "easy" way though an obstacle by using the skinny pedal.

In any event, I didn't want to chime in, usually, just by openly committing to the trip I will probably cause oil prices to hit a new high this summer and/or my 80 will be struck by lightning, and/or the 45 will need one piece of unobtainium the week before the trip...

I've made it from Jacksonville to Sacramento ca in 2.5 days two people driving stopping for food and gas. I've also done the same drive stop each night at a hotel in 4 days. I took the i40 route.

If i were to drive this drive again (especially if someone has never been out west) I would i80 one way and the other way i40. so u can see the country. just my .02

Agreed, my plan exactly since I'm hitting Vegas on the way home, probably have to do a quick Moab trip also... :)

Since it looks like just Jerry is making this trip, I'm unsticking it, and replacing it with a Moab 2014 thread.

Looks like my summer plans changed after today's MRI, unless I can find a way to get it fixed and rehab while finishing the 80 prep to go.

Oh well, life's rough, get a helmet...
