I plan on hitting cruise moab again in the spring. Rubithon might be a stretch for my budget. Del, I'll help ya get your rig ready.

How long, time wise, was your Moab trip this year, from the time you left to the time you got back?

I know I wont be able to do both events and I am shooting for Rubithon but I am going to keep my options open just in case work throws a wrench in my plans.

Thanks for offering to help out. I already have to go up to NC to check on my house so I figured I can knock out two birds with one stone.

I took 12 days but it can be done in less time. It's about 32-35 hours driving casually so if you cannonball you can get there in a day and a half. The event is only 4 days. So altogether it only has to be a 7-8 day trip. Just make sure all of your equipment is in perfect running order. By taking more time I was able to relax and enjoy the trip. Also had a few extra days to run trails with Johnny's old crew from Gotham State and that was totally worth it. Next trip I'm probably gonna make it a 14 day trip and stop in Colorado on the way out.

so far this is some of the things i want to order

orion transfer case
metal tec full cage
sliders
ipor belly armor ( not really sure what to call it)
master clutch cylinder
fix parking brake
beefier front bumper with tow points (not sure if there is an after market one out there)
new seats
hinges for tube doors

DEL

That's a good list man. However, I would move the clutch cylinder and parking brake fix up to the top of the list. Those are things that would fail you at tech inspection, therefore making all of the other work pointless.

I'm with Mike on this one. I would have liked to make the trip a little longer. If everything goes according to plan, I will take Moonshine out west next year and hit up a bunch of things out on the west coast. We will take a full 14 days, if not more, including the trip to Moab.

I also agree that making Moab and Rubithon in one summer is going to be a hell of a stretch. That's a lot of driving for one year!! It'd be more feasible to make one cross-country trip a year, and with land use problems in Cali, I would just as soon make a trip out to Rubithon next.

The list above is in no particular order and it is mostly parts that i wan to order while im over here. I had planned to go out to Utah in October and be out there for a month but my leave got cancelled until december so Im going to drive down to the Yucatan peninsula for a month and chill on a beach somewhere.
I am planning one trip for next year and it is rubithon. I am going to keep Cruise moab as a close second option in case work messes with my leave again.
14 days is probably at the extreme end of how many days I can take off so Im hoping it will be enough for Rubithon.

Reason I'm going ahead and planning to do moab and calling rubithon a maybe is that I know for absolutely certain that I can do moab. It's also over 15 hours closer. And the dates are set in stone. If I recall correctly, hasn't rubithon moved dates over the course of a month or so depending on snow? Also I was a little let down by people backing out at the last minute and that makes me want to stick to something less ambitious. It may help to have a designated coordinator for each trip. I'd be glad to volunteer to be the moab coordinator. A proper plan beginning now would really make things easier for both journeys. I suggest whole heartedly that anyone who is able to do one of these trips should do it. It is so very much worth the effort and financial sacrifice.

very good points. Based on the history that my work has with messing with my leave I should probably plan for something with a locked in date and not to mention alot closer. tough decision but a more realistic choice for me would be to go to MOAB. i will have to really think hard about this one. in the mean time I will focus on ordering the parts that I need to get the 40 ready.

Del i will do the rubicon with ya! I dont think the crockpot will be ready for it. But if u want to go to cali and do the rubicon i will split cost with ya.

Sounds good to me

:beer::beer:

If Johny and Mike took 14 days for Moab, I wander how many days I will need for Rubithon? Any body know how many days would be reasonable? would 14 days be enough?

Having driven from NC to Sacramento Ca several times: With 2 people driving you can make it to cali in 2.5 days. But that sucks! Safe and comfortable 3 to 3.5 days. So theres 6 to 7 days there and back playing it safe.

I think 14 days would be enough. say 7 days of driving, 4-5 days of wheeling. Maybe couple days of R&R.

Just my 2 cents

We didn't take 14, we took 11. Had a nice relaxing drive out there and back. Didn't feel rushed at any point during the trip. Rubicon Springs and back can most certainly be done in 14.

Why don't you think the crockpot will be ready? You don't have that much left to do!

11, sorry. misread.

No big deal man! My point was that if we can have a relaxing road trip out to Moab and back in 11 days, then we should be able to do a trip out to Rubicon Springs in 14.

:bounce:12 days. It took 12 days.:bounce2: Not 11. Not 14. Or I should say we made the journey take 12 days. It could have been a lot shorter. To get to Rubicon it will take from 45 to 50 hours driving time. The main reason I plan a huge window of travel before the event is to anticipate a catastrophe or some major setback, in addition to enjoying the ride out. Next trip I'm taking 14 days because I want to visit Durango and Telluride during the trip. There is also so much to see and do in Moab that I didn't get to do this past trip.

Didn't we get back to your place on Tuesday?

Glad you guys are interested in Rubithon 2013. It should be a blast.

Regarding the timing, I can offer some perspective. Realistically it is a 5 day drive out here, and 5 home @ 600-700 miles per day. Particularly in a Land Cruiser. So that only leaves 4 for the run. The runs are going to be on Tuesday (wagon run and at least 1 other) and Wednesday (others) and the exit is Saturday/Sunday, that does not quite leave enough time to do it. Plus you need to account for mechanical mishaps, unforseen repairs and driver fatigue.

Anyway, if time is a problem, the idea of shipping the trucks and flying out is a good one. If I can help by picking up people at the Sacramento airport on Sunday, I will. I might even be able to put up several of you guys if that's needed on Sunday night, as long as you don't mind sleeping on the floor. If you choose the wagon run, I'll be rolling out on Monday afternoon and camp at Loon Lake right at the start, and obviously, you'd be welcome to camp out and prepare for the next day.

Anyway, posting here to subscribe to your thread, which I will also forward to my brother who lives in Charlotte and may be coming out as well. If he does, he'll be driving my 40 on the wagon run, as his 200 is too nice to bash up on the trail, and his daughter has appropriated his 80.

 <<<you'll be in Norcal where the wine is spectacular-don't miss it

Thanks for the info and offers. I grew up in sac (well carmichael) and still have family in carmichael and fair oaks. I spent my most of my life till i was 23 in the sierras camping and fishing but never have been to the rubicon.
If i do bring my 40 it will be trailered or shipped.

Do u have a rough time or days the big cruiser trip for 2013 is planned? I know it depends on snow pack.

Thanks for the info
