Two headed question here, but now that I've tied up some loose ends on the mechanical stuff, I'm looking into putting a full roll cage on my 40. Basically want to have Front Seat Coverage (including a side bar) and have the rear seats well protected for the kids (and at least 3 point seat belts for them).

As I see it I have two options. Metal Tech Family Cage or Custom Build here locally.

1. Any one you would recommend to build locally? So far I've found Mars Fab/Offroad in Harrisburg and CT Raceworks in Matthews. CT Raceworks looks more like an ATV shop and I couldn't find anyone here referencing Mars in any prior posts. Prior post reference Carolina Rockshop but that's closed near as I can tell. I have to imagine for a simple cage there are other shops (maybe linked to racing) that are probably not on the internet, I just don't happen to know them.

2. If I go with the Metaltech option (either fully assembled or parts on a pallet), I'm still going to need someone with welding capabilities to either assemble the parts on a pallet version or B. weld/fab some brackets to attach seatbelts, so I'd need a recommended welder for that as it exceeds my HS Shop Class level of welding skills.

Thanks for the assistance all...

We use Rowell’s in Indian Trail to do the heavy custom work like that on all our show trucks. They have done some pretty impressive cage work for us.

Mars Fab like you found or a bit a drive north to MnMoffroad but PJ and his crew should be able to help.

I believe @mtweller may have had a skid/crossmember made up at mars.

Rowell’s = $$$$.

Call Lester at Performance Automotive. (704) 238-9884. He’s in Monroe. He’s a crotchety dude that builds race cars. He’s not a 4x4 guy but he might be willing to do it. If so, he’s reasonably priced. Wouldn’t hurt to ask. Bring him a 12 pack of Coors Light and he will be more agreeable.

PJ at M&M is the HEAT!!! Good luck getting a small project though, I've called him on a couple of things and got no reply. From what I understand he's probably focused strictly on buggy builds right now.

^^ Agreed. Custom roll cages take a ton of time. Most likely, a custom cage will cost more than a MT cage kit.

Plenty of guys in the club in CLT have welders. Pay them in beer and pizza, and you might get one of them to help you put it together.

No offense to anyone...........................but

There is a whole lot more to building a roll cage than knowing how to weld. Knowing how to weld well for starters. The man wants 3 point harnesses for his kids. A roll cage is not a job for a beginner.

Flame away :flipoff2:

Well said Stan....

Point taken and understood. I have not spoken to George about his metal melting prowess in a long time. I can also add that he has always been VERY aware of his learning curve limitations and would likely never offer his help where he was in the slightest of doubt, a trait I share with him.

But, thank you @NCFJ and @elkaholic for spanking my first-thought mentality with the simple Safety 101 that I lost while getting ahead of myself. @MBest75 will choose the right and best approach for this endeavor. He is a man of integrity, logic and forward thinking from my interactions with him.

If nothing else, I pointed out a fact that neither of them knew...their proximity to one another. In the interest of learning, I will not delete my post. I encourage people to learn from the mistakes of others, be it in print or hands on experience.

Safety first. Always.

Thanks guys.

1. Yep thinking the MT family cage on a pallet with some custom work is going to be to go to. Just want a guy to talk to about that vs custom. But this makes the most sense to me.

2. I’d prefer someone with a bunch of cage experience to be handling things like frame tie ins and seats etc. maybe someone in the club has this but I’ve done enough welding in my life that I im expecting to pay $$ for it.

3. Thanks for all the suggestions.

I agree with @NCFJ, there is way too much at risk for an amateur welder, but I do appreciate the mention even if it’s unwarranted.

I like the prebuilt option, especially if the purchaser has access to a hauling machine

But the journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step....yanking a cage out

Competition Race Parts. https://competitionraceparts.com/ Is the last place I built a roll cage. Owner Nick Short has raced in Baja, knows his stuff well. The precision bending without weakening the tubes is key, same as the weld integrity so you don’t create weak points. A cage can be expensive but can be knocked out in a day. Assuming you don’t want a “Truck Night in America” cage.
