I'm was going to use VHT Roll Bar paint as recommend. This paint is good for up tp 250°.
But - it's still too hot to touch. I'm looking for a paint, or epoxy base/primer product that I can use because I hate the ugly bar wrap/tape that people use.
Anyone know of any products that might work???
I've used 4 coats - and it's still too HOT to touch...

I had mine powder coated matte chocolate brown, for this very reason. It’s warm to the touch, but fine for my six year old to climb on in the heat of the day. The black leather seats are enough on those days.

Damn... I was hoping for something cheaper ;)

Thank you for your response!!!
Keep me comin!

You can try this: Lizardskin

I thought about using it on the underside of my 40's roof, but I just bought a new headliner instead.

My point was it’s proably more about color choice. Paint has it advantages in terms of touch up and repair. Powder coat is stronger. Who knows, maybe I’ll regret it down the road.

Some years they came gray from the factory. I painted mine the same color as the wheels. Krylon or Rustoleum Smoke gray. Close enough for me.

Below is their video for the Lizardskin Ceramic coating.

This is completely different. Big difference between absorting UV/sun light and heating up verses blocking heat transfer. If your running the exhaust thru the roll bar this would probably help. Probably better finding a material that reflexes verse insulating.

Yep, thought about that after I posted it. None the less, cool stuff for the right purpose, just not this one.

FWIW, engine paint (VHT) is not for thermal protection and doesn't have insulating properties (or stop thermal absorption), it's just suitable for high heat applications. If access to the rig is the issue, buy an aftermarket nylon or plastic roll bar grab handle. My Metal Tech roll cage is powder coated and my grab handle has never been too hot to touch, and yes, it gets hot in Redding, CA.
I make it a habit to tell people NOT to grab the roll cage, especially when off road. You might consider having an upholstery shop make some zip-on vinyl covers without padding where you have to make contact with the roll cage.

Lizardskin is advertising their product for sound and insulating. Something coat the exhaust not paint the engine. Agree high temperature engine paint offers no advantage over other paints. Have a aftermarket roll bar that came with armaflex and zipper cover. That cover is black vinyl and not any better than black metal paint on the roll bar. Assume everybody uses seat covers since dark grey/black vinyl seats would be just as hot.

Personally if the sun is heating the roll bar up to the point can't touch it I don't want to be running around in a open vehicle. Did HVAC in Phoenix for a lot of years. Always wore a hat and long sleeve shirt to protect against UV. Skin cancer is hard to avoid here if you work outside. Personally would rather have a cover over my head and wear a short sleeve shirt. If I go wheeling in the summer I use my FJ62 with A/C.

Good stuff here to consider.
I must say the VHT paint didn't get super hot when compared to regular Rustoleum - knowing its not intended for thermal protection. But it's still too hot to grab (and hold). I plan on running Spector's Family Top so I won't be fully exposed to the the Sun.
I will continue my experimenting and will let you guys know what I choose to do.

Thanks again!

Color will determine the temperature when heated by the sun.

Density will determine how fast the heat will transfer between it and your skin.

Paint it a light color like Splangy suggested and/or make the surface less dense like GA Architect’s Lizard skin suggestion.

Same principal as to why we put those little carpets in front of the toilet with tiled floors.

Just to be clear I'm talking about cold feet on a tile floor. (bare foot) Carpet and tile would be the same temp in a house but the tile will feel cooler. More dense = faster heat transfer.

So would you say that powder coating helped eliminate most (or some) of the roll bar heat???
Still considering may options - and I have about 1 week to decide...

I doubt the powder coated surface has much to do with it, I just know the smaller diameter grab bar is never too hot to touch.

I agree with others that a lighter color who reflect rather than absorb heat ( I prefer black).
