That’s amazing! I’m sure I don’t need 16” and it’s probably a bad idea but I’m obsessed with the idea of having lots of up travel and droop so I can go fast and have all the droop crawling. But I may change my mind it works super good now with 14” of travel even when it drops a coil from the perch

I hear ya, you are getting there though on a fully custom Cruiser. Might as well go all the way! 😂

The Patrol went through three builds and ended up being a trailer queen. At that point I was like, why don’t I just have a buggy?

I have a 95’ HDJ80 right now that I am building into a “crawler”. It was all messed up so we have cut it into a pick up cab. I am not getting crazy with suspension out of the gates but certainly have been thinking about it long term. Starting with 38’s for rubber.

Cheers

Oh I’m sure I’ll at one point think why don’t I have a crawler. But I do like full bodied rigs and I sorta just want to see how far I can take this. I would like to see it where you see so many super built Jeeps where it’s as close to buggy as you get on a fully body full frame rig. The weight is the killer though. Every I’ve dropped major weight out of it from a year ago but it’s still around 6k full of fuel and basically ready to wheel with spares and tools. Used to be about 7k.

But to hit my goal it’ll mean one tons, moving the axle back and body work to make it look good, 42s plus maybe a redo of my links. Try and get close to a smooth belly. Plus tons else to get an atlas in there. Just takes time and money all of wich will take time to make happen. But it’ll be awesome and definitely a trailer queen by then. Actually I’m in Moab now and trailered for the first time and man I want to do this more.

Where did you get the hood scoop??, really like that…love the build

Time to update this thread I suppose. Spent the summer wheeling. Broke some things and learned I hated maxis Razr tires but now that it’s cooling off it’s time to bust some things out before it’s time to go snow wheeling!

I picked these up for $500 off market place.

Spring rate is right in the range I need to be in after talking to a few people on linked 80s. They came off a Tacoma so I doubt the valving will be right but for $500 especially if the spring rates work out will be a steal.

Works light this week so I had time to get a great start on putting them on as well.

Super thankful for my plasma cutter with all the brackets and spring perches I had to cut off.

Today I finished all the grinding and got to making coil towers and axle side tabs

I decided to do tube towers partially because I can bend it and it’s light and also it solves the issue with everyone needing to notch there plate towers around the street column. Im shooting for 5” of up travel while barely if any lifting the front end. The rear sits a little high so an inch wouldn’t hurt but I want to keep it lower.

Is there enough room between your tabs? If it were me, I think I would space those out a little bit to let that shock end ball swivel.

Like these:

So the picture of the tabs was not them finished. Ultimately I had to clearance them a bit more in order to let the misalignment spacers you linked do there job.

Well this is why you cycle the suspension prior to burning things in! Granted it worked out better to decrease the angle of the coilovers anyways but it’d always frustrating.

I went ahead a modified the coil towers and burned it all in. So theoretically I could put it on its own weight right now! But there’s still lots to do. I need to make a brace between the towers and find a spot for my resis.

Another complication is the diesel airbox I had doesn’t work anymore. It was iffy if I could keep it but there’s no real option in retaining it now. So I either build a airbox to work with my snorkel or I sell my old airbox and snorkel and buy new fenders. I also need to relocate the fuel filter which in these diesels was bolted to the top of the spring perch I think there’s room in the engine bay still but it’s getting tight.

What is your hate for the Razr tires? I have wheeled them on two vehicles, 40's and 33's. Both did great. What type of wheeling are you doing where you do not like them? Is is a wear issue or a traction issue?

Thanks

You moving the uppers in more or the lowers more out a bit? There's probably not much room to move the lowers out more

It actually a sidewall failure issue and somewhat a traction issue. I’ve felt they lack lateral traction. Like to slide off rocks I’m trying to climb.

The sidewall failures have been random. Like one on the highway just split and the other was on the rubicon. But there wasn’t anything to cut it on it just ripped apart internally.

I am a Maxxis dealer, never had any issues with any of their product line. That sucks on the sidewalls. Not sure what would cause rhat?

Thanks

I’m not sure but I ended up seeing another guy have similar issues on instagram along with some Australians who follow me mention they are known to have issues over there 🤷🏻‍♂️. I’d love some treps but I don’t have faith in razrs anymore. I will say gluetred saved the day when the sidewall split on the highway.

today I stared with notcing the frame. I was gonna just use tube to notch but knowing me this axle will move eventually and I’ll be stuck extending the notch. So I just cut 1” out by about 3” long and played it back in.
IMG_3347.jpeg

Next I worked on the coilover tower brace. That was fairly strait forward as well. That is where I’ll probably mount my coilover resis. I also welded the diesel fuel filter housing mount to the coilover tower as well.

Next was clearance the fenders. I’ve been rubbing since I put 40s on over two years ago and so finally I’m gonna try and rid off all the rub. I’ll take pics of what I cut out tomorrow but it was significant along with just pulling the remaining fender up a couple inches. But it now doesn’t rub lock to lock.

Well I didn’t take much pictures but I finished it up today. Batteries were an issue and not really solved other than setting them in and a ratchet strap to keep them in place. But I’m going to go to bend next weekend to do some wheeling and needed to get it done.

It’s definitely a huge improvement having the coilovers in. Can go a lot faster over rough terrain and the body roll feels controlled and I don’t even have the front antirock on anymore.

It sits a little taller and I’m not sure how I feel about that but it’s not a lot.
