dont let the paint stripper get on your stock ones either. just trust me on this one :bang:

I have only had plates made for FJ25's and early FJ40's that look like this:

MVC-349aS.JPG

The only stamping on them is the actual numbers which datatags.com stamped for me. I had to show them proof of vin numbers.

All data tags newer than this had a TEQ stamping as well as other stampings to make them harder to replicate.

Too late for me.

Before I knew any better I removed my VIN tag from the firewall of my '81. Later here on mud realized that this frowned upon.

The tag itself is in decent shape, my question is about the rivets.

Now that its off when Im ready to put it back on ... where can I get rivets that will not be scrutinized?

Are these special rivets that are easily identified?

Any aluminum rivet. Every restorer removes and replaces them.

I only have a few left. All Laser etched. You can see there is a couple door tags too. $22 each, paypal. Email me if you want something. majojo4@hotmail.com

Are any of these left? Would be interested in a couple. I also sent you an email.

Or does anyone else have some for sale??

thanks

Coolerman that's what I'm looking for! Anybody know where to get one?

Also, are there only three VINs on a 71 fj40; the LF kick panel id plate, right inner fender id plate and stamed on the RF frame section? Is there a hidden VIN on these anywhere? Does the engine number have anything to do with the other numbers?

Hmm, i'd be interested in this too. My problem is that I have 2 VINs that don't match. Maybe I should just lay low and not do anything to draw attention to it now!?

I have a 1971 rig. The door VIN plate was painted over, and I couldn't register it. I ended up stripping the VIN plate.

Looks crappy, but barely readable. At time I went to the DMV, I couldn't find the right frame horn VIN. Good thing, because I found it later and it does not match the door plate! That would have been an awkward DMV moment? Luckily, the DMV lady liked my rig and gave me a break.. and signed off on my rig with only 1 VIN verification.

How hard is it to rivet these repro VIN places in place?

What do they cost?

Any suggestions on if/what I should do about this double-VIN?
I can't risk running afoul of the commie-state-o-California-DMV and risk my rig's status as a 1971, since that is pre-smog. (but, now is on it's second or third chevy SBC engine  )

I would be hesitant to modify anything now. Highly illegal. If anyone ever calls you up on it, you just say that you dont know, ask the DMV lady that approved it!

Best way to clean one

I have one which was screwed into the engine compartment next to the battery and covered in goop to the point you can't read it. Given the difficulty I encountered removing the 4 screws, I'd bet it hadn't been removed and re-screwed in.

What is the safest way to clean an original plate in order to not wipe away the paint on it?

For what its worth, Dont use the "DE-GREASER" from Costco! Yes its water soluable, safe for bunnies and trees and unicorns, but one swipe over my 35 year old drivers side I.D. plate and all the black ink was gone, leaving just the stamped numbers which is the important stuff. But I was still miffed!

Good luck...I didnt have any luck finding anything that would effectively remove only the unoriginal markings.

Can someone please explain to me where the frame stamp is? Thanks,
Jonny

Since I live in Japan and never owned a 40 state side I have never actually seen the door tag. Can someone post a picture of an actual door tag so I can get an idea of where exactly it is located and what it looks like!

Thanks, Dan

Coolerman, thanx for the picture, could you take a couple steps back so I can figure the exact location out? Thanks again.
