Replacing Window Felts

I'm talking about the felt "wipers" at the bottom of the glass, where the windows roll down into the doors (or tailgate).

Mine are pretty thrashed, partied-out, etc. I think this is yet another source of wind noise coming in the Pig when going down the road.

I was taking the old ones off and looking at these little clips that hold them in. I have heard you can get new felts from JC Whitney, Restoration Specialties, or other in 4-foot sticks.

I was thinking about trying to drill the new felt blanks with holes for these clips and I thought it would be really easy to be off a little bit w/o the aid of a drill press.

Then I thought, what about gluing the new felts on with some 3M Weatherstrip adhesive? Just put the adhesive on the felt and on the door, wait until tacky, and then stick. I thought it might be easier than drilling a bunch of little holes for those clips.

What do you all think?

Have any of you replaced your window felts? What method did you use?

all i can tell you is those bad boys are the devil to get back in!...replaced those on my sons fj40 doors....good luck

i got a chunk of the material from bd weatherstrip in s. denver and reused the clips. pretty easy to do. worst part was making sure the clips got under the felt. you have to slit the felt, push the clip in place, and peel the felt back over the head. drilling wasn't a big deal. no press, just on a block of wood on my welding table.

Wondering if the newer Toyota plastic clips (like the ones used for the rear window strip for 4-runners) would work...part number 90467-04100

I replaced mine with the JCW stuff. Not that difficult.

I think slitting the felt defeats the purpose of replacing. You've already compromised the material before you install it.

Those little metal clips go in from the metal side...no drilling necessary. Put one end of the round part of the clip in the slot, give it a twist and a jiggle (with a pliar) and it's in...just tested this on one of my old pieces.

on a stock slotted one they go in from the metal side. on an aftermarket undrilled they don't. you'd have to make slot to get them in. just a drill hole won't work

Drill hole won't work? All the door has is a hole...

the hole that gets drilled is in the weatherstrip. the stock w/s has a slotted hole. you can maneuver the clips in a slot, but not in a round drilled hole

I was going to use those on the outer rubber weatherstrip on the tailgate.
Good question if those would work on door felts...

Okay, that is what I was thinking of doing with mine.

Is it as windy down there as it is up here? So nice and warm out, but I don't want to be outside b/c of the wind. Sucks!!!

i drilled them. slots are harder and i'm lazy i don't know if gluing would hold up in the long run. doestn' look like i took pics when i made the new felts and i didn't keep the small chunk that was left. it's a rubber channel, with a sticky rubber coating and felt on the one side. bd weatherstrip stocks it, they're down on south broadway, just south of downtown

and yes....stupid windy. kinda funny watching the neighbor sweeping the sidewalk. definitely warm tho. i'm inside clearing half the closet, so the wind isn't bothering me too much

It sounds like we have two different products. I have metal "sticks", that look like they could be drilled, with felt on one side. No sticky rubber anywhere. :-(

So i've been watching this thread build - i know you guys are both very knowledgeable on all stuff piggy, so I was sure that from it would come the easy answer for the rest of us looking to replace our felts. If you didn't have an answer I knew someone would come up with the solution.

I've been using FJ40 felts and wipers from an outfit in OK and just running them short. Better than the glass rattleing around especially during the droopy hinge slam process.

Somebody must know of someplace???? Help

Bet a lot more were watching for the 'answer' too!
