Replacement Seat Options and Mounting Ideas for 80-Series

(Continued) IF I were to have my choice, I would like to find a way to keep manual recline. Just less to deal with and parts to break. It might be possible to reuse the cruiser seat lever for this, but I am not certain yet.
Are those seats from an 94 by any chance?

Is it possible to get a pic of the inner side (left) of the passenger side? Specifically the rail track and side of the seat.

Thanks in advance

For me, quality is great and comfort is excellent. The coverings on the cloth seats probably not last as long as the vinyl. A buddy has Procar in vinyl and his seats look like new, probably near 5yrs old. Mine has only been in about 6 months but no issues at all.

Cheers
Thanks for the reply and info.

Something to keep in mind is where your lower seat belt is. FJ80's have seatbelts mounted to the floor, whereas later FZJ's have seatbelts integrated into the seats.

I'm not sure when the transition happened... anyone with a 93 or 94 care to confirm where their lower seat belts are? I think they're also integrated into the seat.

This is something I'm dealing with as I look at different seat options for my LX.

Not sure if this is helpful but I can confirm that on my 97 the buckles are integrated into the seat in both sides.

I just left the junkyard with a set of seats out of a 92, as well as the lower seat belt sections from the floor of the truck. Neither of these seats has integrated belts.

I suppose the take away is that if you're replacing your seats, keep your seatbelt situation in mind.

Subscribed...Interior redo is high on our list for our new '93 even though the current interior is pretty clean. This is gonna end up being our long trip vehicle and seating is very important to me.

I have a pair of Mastercraft Baja RS seats in my 93. I got them cheap from a guy and had a set of tore up cloth seats that I swiped the brackets from. The stock brackets bolted right up to the Mastercraft base. Comfortable seats but they suck to get in and out of due to the high side. I used the stock seat belt bracket and bolted it to a spot on the mastercraft seats.

I did a pair of seats from a 2000s model Range Rover HSE in my dads 95. They are super comfortable but sit a little high. The wiring harness was a pain in the ass to get figured out, tons of different tilt and up/down stuff. I pulled the brackets off the old seats and used them to fab up new mounts for the Range Rover seats. Made an adapter for the seat belt as well. I picked up a set of Toyota Solara seats recently that I think will replace these.

The more I think about it, given how the 80 series' seat tracks bolt onto the flush surface of the seat, a J#@P Grand Cherokee Limited seat might be perfect. They are EXTREMELY common, and honestly one of the most comfortable seats I have ever sat it. They have a mounting plate that comes down in the four corners, I believe front-to-back there would be enough plate to cover the ~13" inches needed to drill and bolt in the seat track, but I think they are narrower side-to-side than the ~13" needed. Possible a small plate could be fabricated to give the extra width.

I will confirm this, this coming weekend. I have these in my wife's XJ, and I need to finish up some work on the heated seats anyways. I will take more photos. These seats come in tan, charcoal grey, and black. Same seat bolt pattern from XJs (97-01), ZJ (94-99), and WJ (99-2004).

This does not solve the armrest issue, which I think is kinda the crux of the issue for most of us. I have been doing some scouring for how to add an armrest. There are plenty of wise minds in this forum that could likely cook up an easy solution.

I want a seat that has integrated heating and cooling. If I can find those, and they look good, then I'll cut and weld whatever I need to to get them in.

This is an older ZJ seat, but the seat bolt mounts all look the same. Ignore the black metal in the middle since that is the base, but where the red on the sides are is what would hopefully bolt to the stock 80 tracks

You want the seats from a 99-2006 Saab 9-5 then. I had them in my ARC wagon, holy cow was that nice to have AC blowing on your back on long summer drives. I do not even want to think of that the wiring and plumbing would be to get all the features to work though.

There are systems out there that have all seat integrated HVAC systems. I need to find a set. I will look at the SAAB. Wiring doesn't scare me. Plumbing, eh, maybe :flipoff2:

Here is the armrest from a Land Rover Disco II. They are plentiful on eBay currently for $30 each. They seem to just bolt to the side of the seat (Disco seats likely have a captive nut there already), but pulling back the cover and tapping into the seat frame probably wouldn't be much work. I will also confirm this, this weekend.

IF, these were to work, that would be a nice leather seat for $35 (average price for seats at the pick-n-pull), and ~$30 for an armrest, so that would be $65+\- hardware. This would be the budget solution, though if anyone wants\needs 22-way power seats and lumbar AC, this task obviously becomes much more complex.

Something to keep in mind for those wanting to re use the stock 80 series rails. You will add an inch to the overall height of your seat. I had intended to do this when I swapped seats but after mocking everything up the seats were way to high up. That's why I ended up taking out the stock rail and only reusing the feet.

I just want to clarify this. The height of the seat will only rise depending on the A:Thickness of the seat cushion, and B: Distance from the bottom of the mounting tab of the seat and the seat itself.

So, if the cushion is thicker, you will sit up higher, and if the tabs on the bottom of the seat have more space, then the same will happen. The land cruiser's seat mounts are pretty close to bottom side of the cushion; but since the slide is just a flat rail that mounts to the bottom, I would think it would be tougher to find another base that would sit lower. This is a valid concern though, I doubt anyone wants to feel like they're driving Harry and the Hendersons style out the sunroof.

Correct, and if you leave the factory seat rail attached to the factory feet then you are already sitting at plus 1" before you even install your seat.
