Replacement Motor for 8274 12volt (1 Viewer)

I did a MUD search and found some decent information, but it was dated. I did some more research on ebay, etc and here is what I found:

Warn Motor: Too expensive for me

DB Electrical from their website and ebay.
Keyed Shaft - pn:LPL0015 - 4.5hp - $73 + $18 Shipping = $91 (website & ebay)
Splined Shaft - pn:LRW0005 - 4.5hp - $67 + $18 Shipping = $85 (website) - Is this the correct 8274 splined shaft motor?

The DB Electrical, cgatesdsa, and eap-wholesale motors look similar with the exception of the end plate and the horsepower rating. The cgatesdata and eap-wholesale are the same part#, hp rating, and ebay pictures. eap-wholesale lists Ametek as the manufacturer, so I googled them. At Ametek.com I selected "motors" under "Motors & Blowers" in the "Our Products" section on the left. In the "Motors" section I chose "Winch". Below is what popped up:

Isn't Prestolite one of the old OEM Warn motor manufacturers? Are they now a subsidiary of Ametek? Further search on the amtekfsm.com site was not successful in finding item#: 10746HDN listed by cgatesdsa and eap-wholesale. I left an email to the "contact us" address asking about 10746HDN and its Warn compatability. I guess I should have asked them where the motors are made. I will follow up with that question.

Does anyone have experience with the Ametek/Prestolite 4.8hp motor on an 8274?

No experience with the 4.8hp motor, but the older motors were prestolite, however Im under the impression they were rated about 2 hp.

I have heard of 6.5 hp warn winch motors from the 12K warn mounted on 8274's as well.

I think the original Prestolite 8274 motors are 2.5hp. It would be great to go to 4.5 or 4.8hp for under $100. I'm sure 6.5 would be awesome but expensive.

Ya Im thinking about updating the 8274's i have in the garage with fresh DB motors, seals, paint and maybe some synthetic line. Although money's tight so maybe in the new year.

Ametek got back to me today and confirmed their part number AMJ-4635 (Lester's # 10746HDN) is a Prestolite manufactured motor built in Oklahoma USA.

I just left a message for ebay seller cgatesdsa to verify the motors they are selling on ebay are the actual Prestolite AMJ-4635 made in Oklahoma and not an aftermarket overseas clone.

I will also ask if cgatesdsa sells the keyed spline version of this motor.

I will post when they respond.

Knew it was too good to be true (made in the USA). The ebay sellers listed the Prestolite part number and other manufacturers part numbers including Warn's as a crossreference. The 4.8hp motors for sale on ebay are aftermarket and made in china like the 4.5hp motors sold by DB Electrical. I have asked the ebay vendor to provide details on how their 4.8hp motor is different from the DB Electrical 4.5hp motors other than .3hp. References for customers using these motors on Warn 8274 winches were also requested.

Has anyone on MUD used one of these motors? How's it working for you?

I'm trying to source a replacement or get my 8274's motor rewound. The part number on the data plate reads: MRV-B-4 and 15877. Googling the first designator yields some results. I'm digging through them, but I'll probably try to get down to the local rewinder tomorrow to see what they say regarding price for repair.

None of the numbers I list above show up on the prestolite site. Maybe I'll try to call them tomorrow, too.

The key for you is using your serial number or removing the motor to determine if your motor is a keyed shaft or 20 spline shaft. I would be very interested in hearing what a rewind on your 2.5hp Prestolite will cost. It will be hard for me to not try one of the china made 4.5-4.8hp motors for ~$85-$90. I'll always keep my Prestolite as a backup.

I yours is a keyed shaft, all you have to do to use the 20 spline motor is buy a new splined pinion (pn: 15879) from Warn for ~$22.

My motor is pulled and on the deck. It is keyed, and I was unaware there was a splined "upgrade." I'll definitely look into it. Thanks for the tip!

I think the 20 spline pinion (gear that goes on the motor shaft) is stronger than the keyed pinion. Warn changed later 8274s and all 8274-50s to the 20 spline pinion/shaft. If you're already buying a new motor, you might as well spend another $22 on the splined pinion and buy the splined motor which is a few bucks less than the keyed.

Thanks for the info. It turns out that rewinding DC motors is becoming a lost art. I called at least 5 shops today, and each one told me to call another. Apparently, with all the Chinese replacements out there, it's not cost effective to maintain the skill anymore.

I spoke with an alternator/started exchange service, though, and Prestolite doesn't offer the MRV-B-4 anymore. There is another place in Illinois (I think) that makes the motors here in the good 'ole US of A. They cost ~$300, though.

Regarding my motor, I hooked it up wrong when I tested it. I suspect that the PO did, as well, since there were no solenoids with the winch. He probably made the same mistake I did. The starter shop was nice enough to give the motor a look over (for free) and handed me a connection diagram to properly test it on my way out the door. They've earned my future business for sure! I'll test the motor tomorrow after I put it back on the winch.

A 6 hp 24 V motor should pull more than" great". Most 24V motors are 2.5 , 2.8Hp

I bought a new winch motor for my 8274 from a company called western motors. They build them in the USA. Mine was 24 volt and they actually gave me a 6hp model. Like you said they were 300 bucks but it pulls great.

I spoke to Western Motors and the 12volt 6hp 20-spline (W-7608) was $240 + shipping. Western gave me the name and number of a local distributor who quoted $191 + shipping for the same motor. Western also informed me that their motors are USA built with some foreign parts, including china.

I have the 6HP 24V Western Motor Service that I picked up in Richmond B.C. I LIKE IT. Mine came with the bearing that goes into the top cover of the 8274

Has anyone on MUD used one of these motors? How's it working for you?

I know I'm quoting an older part of this thread, but I did have a DB Electric Chinese motor on my 8274 - it lasted less than a year; on my second or third wheeling trip it started working intermittently and then stopped in the middle of winching out of the bottom of Dark Canyon or Mule Canyon (can't remember which) in southern Utah. Fortunately there were several other winches in my trail group. When I got home and tore it down, this is what I found:

Most of the copper worn/burned off of the armature!

That's when I decided that the 6hp Warn motor from the 9.5XP was not so expensive after all.

Good luck with the Western motors, I hope they work out for you.
