Hi Everyone,
I'm looking for a replacement headlight switch for my '75 FJ40. The original one died and and can't seem to bring it back to life. The only one's I've found so far are for earlier models and won't work in mine, at least not without some re-wiring. If anyone has one they'd part with, I'll gladly pay. Or if you know where I can find one, I appreciate any info you have.

Thanks,
Steve

Have you tried the Toyota dealer? I’m always surprised by the items still available. Before I bought a new one I was able to clean mine up some and get it working, including a new lamp, until it finally gave up for good. That was over a period of a few decades. I probably still have the old one somewhere, I will have a look around and let you know.

You can have this one. Maybe get one good one out of two old ones. At any rate, here’s the part number. My 40 is Feb 1974.

You could try Classic Cruisers in Colorado. They are a huge Fj40 salvage yard and I would bet money they have a good ‘75 headlight switch that would match better then the new OEM one (if that matters to you). They ship anywhere and I’ve had at least 25 shipments to me here in Hawaii. Give Brandon the owner a call, he’s super knowledgeable.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I was able to take mine apart and get it working again. The amazing thing is I was able to get it back together again! Anyway, all is good now. I appreciate all the suggestions. This is a great resource.

My headlight switch on my '75 40 is missing the chrome trim piece on the drivers side of the dash. I think my switch is ok, but the prior owner must have done some work on that switch and lost the decorative chrome trim in the process. I hate to buy a new switch just to obtain that round chrome piece. Does anyone have that piece or a non-functioning switch they be willing to give up? I'd gladly pay shipping and whatever you think it's worth.

I know what you're saying, but It is a '75, assembled in Costa Rica with components from earlier years. This was per an agreement between Japan and the CR government, to have a company in CR that assembled FJs in a plant there, and sold to the public in San Jose, Costa Rica. The dash, hood, and doors are not what a US '75 would have had. You are right.

Your Costa Rica assembled truck does not have a OEM toyota head lamp switch ..,

That particular switch you have installed is a Made in Chairman MOE Spec. Market Region … part

It will not be able to be fitted with the OEM Toyota same silver shiny outer pin wrench nut bezel either , because of its aftermarket different thread pitch and diameter design and general nature …

That particular light switch is designed and intended for a Golf Cart , and the red , green and white wires on its pigtail are very unsized in thickness Guage to handle your 1975 Costa Rica 1st pull parking and running lamps let alone head lamps
On also at night time driving ..

You should stop what your doing and make sure it’s wired to a fused circuit and
Not simply hard wired as I have seen many times come to my shop in the past with this same exact switch and others that resemble it …

See below my tech refrence photos of the exact light switch you have and you can further understand what I go over here is by the toyota FSM correctly stated and well intended advice to remove that light duty golf cart switch for 6V and 12v systems with
2 small fog type lamps and 2 small red rear lamps …

Not even close to the AMP draw of a passenger vehicle let alone A nice Land Cruiser like you have …

Matt

these photos below i saw online a while back , i stopped to save because it clearly shows why this golf cart switch winds up installed on land cruisers fj40 fj55 so often ........

this is the same exact switch in the blue 75 costa rica FJ40 above ..

this is a example of intentional scum at work ..

sad ..........

Wow, Toyota Matt, thank you so much for such phenomenal detail. Knowing this now is going to save me from doing a lot unnecessary legwork. I seriously doubt if I would have uncovered this information, no matter how hard I tried. Again, thank you. I guess the right course of action now is for me to get that golf cart switch out of there and replaced with a "correct" aftermarket switch.

your welcome ....

i started out my path to what it has become to be currently , repairing , refreshing & restoring Land Cruiser pull switch knobs & the pull switch boxes they mechanically attach to shortly after MUD found me ...

it quickly became a unique passion that i can only compare to building model air planes and assembling oem
Estes rockets with my dad at the dining room table as far back as i can remember as youngster ...

one word of well intended wisdom here : t

a "correct" aftermarket switch , simply does not exist & you will be repeating the same poor choice that was made already by the poor-choice maker that did not know any better ...

You do know better now as a result of reaching out here in the exact correct way you did ..

only a OEM Toyota Japan spec. Lights Switch will install fit form and function correctly , and for the future as in decades do so as well ...

make sense ....

happy to help .:wrench::wrench::wrench:
