Any good ideas on how to remove the factory wheel locks without the key? They aren't tapered, so the pound a socket on it technique won't work....

thanks,

John S.

ignore this thread... a new key is $17 from the dealer...

I've never seen a factory OEM wheel lock. Is this just something the dealer installed?

Port installed item, they are even listed on my trucks factory window sticker.

Use an air chisel straight on the 90 degree edge and after you get a bit of groove cut.. switch to about a 45 degree angle. Hammering in a CCW direction. Took 6 of them off my wife's GX470 in about 10 minutes. Throw them away afterwards and get the real deal!

The factory installed ones on mine were made by McGuard. I used a 19mm 12pt. deep socket with a hammer and ratchet. It took me 10 minutes to get all for locks off. The socket was $4.

Or just weld a big nut on top of each one and then use whatever fits the new nut to remove them.

Agree, never seen a "factory" lock, all that I have seen were McGuard. Pound a socket on and zip off with the impact, done. I toss them in the recycle, worthless, except for causing big entertainment on the trail, something is broken and cant find the key, huge fun!

I like the air chisel trick. As you don't have to buy any BSHF sockets.. even tho' they are super cheap. However if you have to buy an air compressor powerful enough for the air chisel.. you might want to consider buying the 19mm sockets no matter how expensive they are! ;)

I went to the Lexus dealer for the first time ever. I've been missing out. They had have a "cafe" with free food and drinks. So for my $17 wheel lock, I got a free meal included.

I tried the pound a socket on method and that didn't work for me.

I decided that between the key only by $17, plus the Lexus dealer is exactly on my way home, that was the best way to go... And yes, I'm going to use my $17 key to remove the locks and replace them with standard lugnuts. The locks and new key will go in my spare parts box in case I want to switch back later for some reason.

thanks for all of the ideas.

I pounded on a Craftsman 6-point deep well socket (standard, not metric), then used the impact to zip them off. I bought the "wheel lock removal tool" from O'Reilly and it doesn't work on these because they are too small outside diameter.

i hate wheel locks.
