Hi, curious to know if anyone has any guidance. I got a BJ40 1979 and thinking of importing it to the U.S but I keep hearing I wont be able to register the car in California because of regulations. I saw that 1997 and below, Diesel engines are exempt. Anyone know if this is possible? I don't want to start the process of bringing the car and then not being able to pass customs... Thank you everyone

Don't waste your time or money

  • Evidence that your foreign import vehicle meets United States (U.S.) Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS).
    • This is mandatory for vehicles manufactured after 1995.
    • This includes the federal certification label attached to the vehicle confirming FMVSS certification.
  • Additional evidence: A copy of a letter from the manufacturer confirming that the vehicle meets FMVSS and U.S. emissions standards.
  • A certificate stating that the vehicle has been inspected by a California Air Resources Board-licensed laboratory.

Its your money, spend it how you want. To me spending all that money to transport, import, pay fees for detection and inspection (Alice's Restaurant - Whitehall induction center) for an old LandCruiser that likely needs a lot of work seems wasteful now if it was a Unimog or a P-38 Lighting that could be different.
Are there parts for "B" diesel's?

Yes, just a bit more of a struggle to find them, usually, Id find a seller from Australia. Yeah... when I bought it I thought I was saving money haha then started to see all the obstacles related to registering the car in Ca haha

Yeah its more complicated than I thought haha thanks for sharing the above

You're dealing with several different agencies with different rules. Mostly they overlap in a way that works out but California is "special".

Customs is fine. Federally there is no issue - you'd be fine with EPA rules. Most (any?) other states would be fine

But California makes it hard AND expensive to register grey market vehicles.

@bhsdriller laid out what California requires to register. You don't have a federal label so the first bullet is closed to you. Toyota won't provide a letter so that's a dead end.

That leaves the testing route. The state has only licensed one facility to test imports. CEE in Santa Ana. A few mudder's have gone through the process. Expect to pay $7-12k, wait 4-12 months, and be dealing with DMV folks who have no idea how this works.

You are needing paperwork?
For small consideration am being happy to supply all paperwork, testing certification, license plates etc.
