A thread about forward crank seal leakage that lead to replacement of the pulley with photos.

Spent the night in the forest. I woke up to rain and drove into sunshine. Trees grow like grass in the PNW and I like it!

I went with the suggestions in this thread. Works great! Notice that I included the white plastic guide at the pedal. This guide was taken from the OEM not so good hand throttle assembly.

After 2 failed Wilwood 1.125” bore MC’s I went to Napa and bought a “corvette style” MC with 1.125” bore. I just asked for a MC for a 1980 Vette. Had to make new hard lines to connect the Wilwood proportioning valve but after 2200 miles and some wheeling action this chinesium MC is not falling apart like the two fancy Wilwood MC’s began to do almost immediately after install.

It took the first one 16 months to completely fail and the seals were chewed up. Sent it in and Wilwood sent me another. Within a few hundred miles and hard use on the Dusy Ershim trail I could see black sediment in the bottom of the reservoir from an already deteriorating plunger seal. I took it apart and was not surprised to see that one of the 4 seals on the piston was already chewed. Wilwood got involved and told me it looked like the plunger was being side loaded. I said What?? Anyway they have sent me my last free MC and it’s still in the box. I look forward to telling that manager, who is a nice guy, that this $55 Napa MC is doing the job. I think perhaps the fancy Wilwood MC isn’t suited to stopping a heavy 80 on 37’s from dropping of big rocks. Who knows....

Steve,

It will be interesting to see if mine fails like yours did, so far no issues. I did actually open it yesterday, to check the fluid level before our next trip, and everything inside seemed pretty clean and no bits floating around.

After our Thanksgiving trip I’ll have about 5500 miles on my Hydroboost system. Not sure of that means anything, I guess I’m just gonna keep checking and hoping I never find what you did.

I am so loving by brakes now, I cannot even imagine going back to stock, it’s everything I hoped and dreamed of. It was one of the more challenging and time consuming mods I’ve done but well worth the sweat equity !

Yes, I’m a little confused as to why I had the problem I had with the Wilwood MC. Glad to hear that your brakes perform up to your expectations. Mine do as well.

White Knuckle sliders lower bolts behind cats pulled out of the frame. Did me some farm welding. I used the trans Mount bolts as an anchor. Get some!

Happy New Year ! I did some hacking yesterday with the intention of bracing the wings of the 4x4Labs bumper. I welded a web onto the bumper wing a few years ago but it still flexes under heavy side loads and my web damaged the body and opened up the seems that I cut in for tire clearance. Pic show the issue. Anyway, this is how I cut the rear quarters. A see where others have simply hacked all the way back. I chose this pattern because all I really need to accomplish is solid wing bracing of the bumper.

Would you like a pic of how my non-4xlabs bumper is braced?

In my Hanna RR bumper he tied the wings into the frame via the rectangle rubber cover in the framerail - you show it & it punches through both sides - so if you’re inclined to go something like that you can weld an arm/plate & use ~5/8“ bolt to the framerail there.

If that is anything close to how you planned to do it.

HTH.

I’ve been thinking about this for 4 years. I’ve just now gathered the guts to do it. Cutting a good body seems silly but it becomes necessary when. When what?

Here is the web I welding in a few years ago. It definitely helps but when hit hard it does the damage that forced me to cut the body in search of solid bracing. I will run a tube from the bumper wing to the 2x2 piece of the current web after I cut the rest of the web out.

Now that you posted the last picture I can see what you are talking about, that brace was causing a lot of damage.
I don't see a issue with cutting the body, with the way you like to wheel it's never going to be a beauty queen.
Ya I get the fact that these Regs are gaining in value, But Guys Like us bought them to be used the way they were meant to be used ( wheeling )
Do you plan to close that area in to keep the dirt, water & elements out ?

Thanks for the examples. Part of this project will be to replace the small side wing tube that came with the Labs bumper kit with 1 3/4” tubing and then run support to that tube directly. I figured bracing the wing as high up as I could would be the strongest. That’s why I cut the rear quarter up to the height that I did.

Then I’ll have someplace pretty solid to weld on some more tubing for higher up tail light and rear quarter panel armor. I haven’t yet decide just how crazy I’ll go with that but at the rate I’m going I’ll miss snow wheeling this year. Haha

I agree. It’s a little too late to be concerned about the purity of my 80.
