rear storage boxes (3 Viewers)

alright did a bit of searching and was woundering alof of you run home built storage boxes and i was woundering if you could
1. post some pics
2. tell what you made them out of
3 maybe give a few notes as to the purpose of your design (like why u made top flip up instead of roll out kinda stuff)
4 if your happy with your design or what you would do different about it.

my biggest thing is il build something and use it for about a month. after that moneth i have about 6 things that i whish i had thought about and would do diff if i was just starting it again. you learn from use

quick question when u fold down your middl row is the hight of the box the same as the seat? or is it higher?

Mine is made from 1/2 inch plywood and is covered in a carpet material that I sourced from our dashmat vendor. It is bolted to the floor utilizing the third row striker mounting holes. The slide-outs are Rubbermaid storage boxes with wheels on the bottom and are designed to slide under beds. The box is designed so that .30 and .50 caliber ammo cans can also be slid in....

The box is designed so that .30 and .50 caliber ammo cans can also be slid in....

.30 cal cans for the 5.56mm NATO, and .50 cal cans for the 7.62mm NATO, that's my distribution. Unfortunately, no .30-06 Springfield, as my Garand has been converted to the superior .30 cal round that's still actually in use by first world militaries...

It's higher. I needed it tall enough to fit some of the stuff I put in there, which made it a bit too tall to line up with the seats (but not by much). My plan was to either throw a pillow or folded-up blanket on top of the seat back to make up the difference, or build another cargo box of the same height that would sit in front, where the second row seat would normally reside. For now I use the blanket method...

Custom Drawers

Here is my set-up which has saved me hours of loading/unpacking during trips! I'll give credit to Jim Brantley for the base design. I made a few minor additions that I thought was needed:

1) Fold-up flaps to make the entire platform flat ( this is a must if you have a dog in the back)
2) Cotter Pin setup (not shown) to index the drawer and keep it open when on a slanted hill. This also keeps the drawer from rolling out too far or closing.
3) Hand holds to open and close drawer without pinching fingers


Things I wish I added:

- top hatch for getting to gear that is inacessible when the back is stuck up against a tree or rock!

Derek by far has the best write-up. I used the same drawer slides everyone else uses, holds 500lbs, can't go wrong with that....

Just guessing, but it looks like the tops of the wheel wells are level w/ the bottom of the wings, so the wings probably rest on the wheel wells and that rear crossmember. Again, just guessing.

But, if you buy one of those you do not get to ruin your best carbide blade when you hit that one nail you forgot to pull out of the mock-up.. And then you do not get to sniff the contact cement when you are re-stretching the carpet 'cuz you jacked it up to begin with and you spilled your last beer when you reached over to get the hammer and the damn bolt holes in the bottom are off just a touch and the tail gate won't close and......
