I’m replacing what I thought just to be a leaky rear pinion seal, but after popping the flange off, I think I’ve got other issues than just the seal. See below:

Besides replacing the flange, is there anything else I should check? Is this a result of poor installation in the past? Pitting just seems like time and water wasn’t on its side. How about the grooves?

I assume flange is the correct word.

New companion flanges are pretty cheap, around $50 from 'mud vendors. Pitting means water/moisture in the rear axle. If you haven't already, I would dump the oil and check the diff for rust. Otherwise, new companion flange and seal.

Fresh oil, everything from the other side of the diff is good. I was in there about 6months ago.

In addition the the new nut from Toyota. I’m going to order this:

Good?

As an option you can do a spedi-sleeve too.
