FJ62 with a “new” transmission (less than 1,000 miles on a Vallet Hybrids rebuild) stopped shifting into OD.
(Edit: torque converter is not locking up. The truck is going into 4th/OD. I was corrected later in the thread)

I’m halfway to Dallas from Austin.

Driving at 65/70 mph for about 115 miles, everything shifting fine.

Shifter is cool to the touch.

Felt like it slipped out of OD and the rpms raised up. Took my foot off the pedal, tried to push T-case into H2 but it’s already there.

Pushed the gas pedal and was going but at a much higher rpm. 3000 at 60mph.

Adjusted KD cable up and down, no change.
Fluid is 1/2way between marks on the hot part of stick.

add oil to the tranny, let it cool down a bit and give a try.
Should drive better at least to get you to your destination

Also, I’ve been driving at around 2200 rpm’s/45-50mph just to keep going. That should be fine, yeah?

Just sucks on a 75mph freeway even in the slow lane with hazards on.

Yes will be fine, don't go over 3000 RPM, that will put your 3FE under stress
Be Careful on HWY 35 is a dangerous road

You need to figure out if you've truly lost 4th gear, or just lost torque converter lockup.

Remember that with a normally operating a440F tranny you'll feel shifts from first to second, then second to third, then third to fourth (i.e., overdrive), then TC lockup (feels like another shift) around 50 MPH.

3000 at 60mph.
That's 3rd gear on a stock rig. Fourth unlocked would be a few hundred rpm's lower, and 4th locked (as it should be at that speed) would be just above 2k.

I forget: Does your shifter have 1, 2, 3, D; same as an early 80 series? If so see if there's any difference between 3 and D.

I was counting through the gears and it sure seemed like I got to 4 and it just didn't lock up and drop the RPM's.
Also, I am estimating the 3k@60, there were hills and I didn't want to break anything so I was afraid to push it.

Yes, the 62 has 1, 2, 3, D. Wasn't getting any difference between 3 and D.

Fortunately @orangefj45 Georg is helping diagnose.

Did the linkage change/slip enough that you are not actually in OD?
Interesting. I had this thought as well but don't know how to approach.

From Georg just now:

"Definitely not a torque converter issue or it would t move at all.

I’d say that’s something in the valve body or the OD clutch pack."

Damn it.
I just put this transmission in.
Was super clean when we did and has been shifting and performing great in the 460 miles since we finished.

Just to curb anyone's good intentions: Yes, I want an H55 in there. No, I can't afford it. I will honestly probably have to sell this truck if I need to put another trans in.

I really could use some good ideas on what I could do. For now, I'll get to the AirBnB and drop the pan and take a look. If I find clutch pack material in there I'm going to cry...

Georg is checking with his rebuild guy to see what he thinks is up. Everyone seems stumped on this.

So driving to my lodging I am able to get up to 4th.
The difference between 3rd and 4th is very subtle but there. No real chance to push it into the 50’s as it was mostly surface streets.

Going to unload and hit the auto parts store for an oil catch pan and some more ATF.

Are you feeling solid engagement with each gear selection? Especially between D and 3rd on the gear selector?
Yes, I believe so.
One oddity is that I have to force it into park most of the time, as in reverse into park shoving the stick forward

@Cruiser Cult
Affirmed, definite engagement when moving stick through gears.

Going to drain and see if I see anything suspicious in the fluid or on the plug. If I do I’ll drop the pan and go from there. Will need a pan gasket at the least.

Thankfully I have a gated driveway and can hitch a ride the next several days but I still have to get back to Austin (+/-200mi).

To keep this going and hopefully keep it on top,

Pulled the plug, fluid looks good and doesn’t smell like the fried ATF I’ve smelled before. Stinks like it should I guess.

There were some fines on the plug, not experienced enough to know what this means.

Pics are before and after.
