Not sure what you guys are doing with your brakes but I am running vented rotors and a Toyota V6 master cyl and I can lock up 37's both front and rears on demand.

X2 well when Tencha was con 37" now .. not that easy .. ;)

A bump for a beautiful cruiser! Now that you've been driving it have your impressions changed at all? How is the mileage?

Bringing this back around to see what your thoughts are after months of having the cruiser (hopefully not deployed so you can play with her!).

I have a B3.3 in a 4WD tractor. My engine is rated at 65HP which is fine. it has been a great engine, burns about 1/2 gallon per hour.

I gave some thought to putting the B3.3 in my FJ60 and talked with Proffit about it some years ago. He thought it might be underpowered for these mountains. Perhaps with a turbo. Now, the Cummins rep I spoke with does not recommend an aftermarket turbo fix. The turbocharged B3.3s supposedly have different head and pistons. I cannot confirm that.

At my altitude, I would go turbo, third generation intercooled, espcially for the automobile application where throttle response counts.

In any event, your conversion looks clean and professional. I doff my hat and bow in your general direction.

Thought i would update this after some driving time.

So, i have about 6K on the motor now and its been running great. 27 mpg almost every time. I love it, and i still smile every time i fire it up.

It is slightly stronger than my 2F was, but very similar driving styles. Hills are slow that is for sure, i live on top of a very steep grade and i know people getting stuck behind me are pissed. 65 mph is top level cruising. Fine by me, i will take that for the mileage i get. I dont even come close to the 2600 redline with the 5 speed. The mechanical rev limiter is set up for 2K anyways so its not an issue.

So the only issues ive had were more with the conversion then the motor. I had to remove the big toyota cleaner and put the K&N (in pic with pre filter) one on there so i could get a larger belt on (the smaller one was WAY too tight and destroyed itself). The brakes and tach began acting funny... jumpy tach and nuetral braking was SCARY. Per advice from Scott at Eco Offroad (thanks man!) i changed the alternator to a new one and bam... all those issues fixed (vacuum pump for brakes is on the alternator). Other than that Proffitts was awesome with helping me as well, though they said they are no longer doing cummins conversions...

With the K&N air filter on there the turbo is LOUD. I was wondering what the hell the noise was when i first changed it out! So more sound proofing is in order for the firewall now, which may or may not ever get done :-) I have taken the dash off twice for various reasons and that is not something i see myself doing anytime soon. Oh well, its not too bad, just a constant turbo whistle, not a band problem to have!

I would do this again given the chance. The motor is all mechanical, good mileage, reliable, simple and keeps me under the speed limit. The motor is made in Japan (I was suprised to read that on the engine badge!), so i dont feel like the cruiser strayed too far from its roots either... If anyone has more questions let me know, im done with deployments, thank god, and i also need to change my user name to growlerdriver

Webasto Diesel heater is going in this summer before next winter. I am on the mountain a lot, climbing and skiing and when i get back to the truck it usually very cold and i hate hearing the poor engine start in that. Also (fingers crossed) Campteq will make the camper for the 60 shortly and i will be able to run the heater in the truck with it off.

Question i have for anyone: is an intercooler worth it? I dont tow anything, so proffitts told me i didnt need one during the install, they said the cost wasnt worth the improvement. I am now really looking to get a 16 foot 3500lb airstream and am wondering if it would be worth the upgrade now?

at some point i need to get all my updates under one thread...
anyways these are a few other things going on...

If you cant tell i am crazy picky and huge perfectionist. I knew i was getting the kaymar bumper so i needed a front bumper to match. I called Proffitts and they did an absolutely amazing job recreating the rear bumper for the front. Here are the results:

Wow I don't think I have ever seen such a clean engine bay. Everything looks pristine in there! You have done an impressive job with it man and my only question would be did Proffitt say why they won't do cummins swaps?

Other than that it is time for you to enjoy her!!!

Amazing job! Very clean conversion and overall truck, I'm a sucker for the Sand colour 60's.

With such an elegant engine in a such a pristine bay, can't something be done with that rusty-looking turbo?

ive thought about that too... believe me. I tried to have proffitts ceramic coat it when they were doing the other stuff, but i think it would be too much to take it apart and have it done. so yeah.
I have this manex manifold polish i use, but it doesnt last too long.

Im open for ideas!

Dont comment on my PS pulley either :flipoff2:

VHT my friend, VHT.

I'm not sure why they where so worried about taking the turbine housing off. All you need to do is take the turbo off, unbolt the v band holding the turbine housing onto the CHRA then remove the WG arm and it will come off. Not issues with parts falling out or anything just be careful not to damage the turbine blades.

You asked about an intercooler being worth it... it depends. First of all what are your EGTs like right now? Plan on turning up the IP any? Can you remind me if you've got a boost and pyrometer?

i dont have boost or pyro. I figured with the rev limiter and not towing anything i wouldnt really need one.

you think it can be coated without issue?

if so i will do the intake manifold as well, they didnt do that either...

I have had many turbine housings coated over the years, most have been ceramic coated. The paint on coatings do not seem to last.

If you are asking about coating the compressor housing too I have seen no improvement in performance from coating that. You would see much more benefit moving the air filter to a cooler spot on the engine bay or making the first set-up fit with a belt that is in-between the too short one and one you have now.

I look at coating the exhaust manifold and turbine as purely cosmetic things. There is no appreciable difference in under hood temps or performance. I have had much better thermal reduction results using high quality turbine housing dippers and down pipe wraps.
