So I get 3 miles from home... no traffic... steady flow... and I hear something pop... the entire top of my radiator is cracked open... I am not so worried about the radiator as I am what might of caused it to burst like that...

May I suggest an OEM radiator cap?? They are high quality.

I don't think even a "high quality" OE radiator cap is going to seal that gash!:hillbilly:

The cap on that wreck looks to be OE.

We are seeing more and more rigs with fractured tanks. Probably just old age.

Yes, it looks OE from 1995 (or whatever year his rig is). Mine get replaced every 4-5 years. I like to have at least one part under the hood not caked in oil... Side benefit is that my radiator caps work. :meh:

Meaning don't go with an autozone special on his new radiator. Just changed my cap. The old one was OE but obviously very old. Even awesome parts die of old age.

went with the Koyo Radiator / had just spent a bunch of $$$ on brakes and a lift so I was a little low on funds / replacing thermostat, fan clutch and hoses... so top ramen for me until payday LOL

Welcome to the club.

From my research the Koyo is the best of the standard aftermarket parts, it seems comparable to OEM in quality. Since your OEM broke, might be fun to dissect it and post detailed pictures of how it's constructed. Someone do the same on an old Koyo and compare notes. Material thickness, rib count, joint construction, etc...

The Factory Toyota radiator was $345.xx + freight from CDan. Mine did the exact same thing a year ago. Mine was due to a radiator cap that was coated in the red/green mix sludge so it didn't open from a WOT condition and the A/C kicked in, blowing off the aftermarket belts, spiking the cooling temps, couldn't relieve, and blew it up just like yours.

New rad, hoses, lots of other while you;re in there's and clean bill of health on the HG since it was done 65K miles prior to the failure.

Hope all is well!

anyone know if mishimoto make radiators for these? i have one on my jeep and the temps never reach 200 degrees even in 120 degree days...

Sorry to hear about your radiator. Probably just old age as others have said. If it makes you feel any better, mine blew up 2 days ago. At the shop right now with a $1200 price tag on it.
