I have a BJ42 and would like to add a Tach. I know how to do a gas engine, but not sure about a diesel. I am sure Toyota included a Tach on some of it's later trucks like the FJ60 and 62. Since there is no ignition system on a diesel how do I do it. I know there can be a geared mechanical driven system but I'm thinking that's less practical to add on.

I don't have a diesel, but the light bulb on my 6k auto meter tach just went out and I have to send it to them for a free bulb replacement.
I was looking online at 5k tachs for my 2F and found this for diesels. It explains the installation process.
It's a lot more expensive than my $50 6k tach though.

That looks like a pretty easy installation! Just gotta find someone with the tool to calibrate it. Otherwise you are out another couple hundred.

AutoMeter, they have a u tube presentation. the sensor goes on the alternator and you adjust it to the engine rpm.

I assume you are running 24volts? All the models show 12 or 16 volts. Any issues?
The biggest issue is that you have to ask if products will work. If I wanted an digital instrument cluster - they don't work on 24 volts systems, at least the ones i'v looked into. You will likely have to live with Kilometers, new speedometers in miles are hard to find.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned this yet, although sourcing the parts may take a while. BJ42L models in the Australia market had factory tachometers. IIRC the BJ42LX models specifically.

Not sure it was LX models for the BJ42. These seem to be standard on the HJ47 from 10/81 on in Australia. That is when the insert dash started on RHD. Diagram list the tachometer with a ARL which assume is Australia only. List available for FJ40/BJ42/HJ47. Would love to find one from a FJ40 but settling on one from a HJ47 and modifying a FJ62 tachometer.
