Sourcing a OEM tach is gonna be spendy and tough. Id love to run a OEM in my 42

What gives you that idea :) they are listing for stupid $$$$

There’s a thread somewhere on Mud where someone had a machine shop recreate the housing and then used a standard auto meter tach in its place. Pretty slick looking and *nearly* stock. I’ll see if I can find it

An FJ60 tachometer in a custom housing would look great, that's my plan for my '71 FJ40 build. I've already fabricated the harness.

Be curious about the wiring harness you made?

I know there is a thread on Mud about using a 60 series tachometer in a 40 series RHD housing. Required moving at least one of the mounting posts on the tachometer. There are a few challenges installing one in a LHD FJ40. One the side defrost vent can not be used on the driver's side. Second the light switch has to be relocated. Australia never had the lower dash pad and the light switch was mounted in that area. Assume the pre 9/72 have to deal turn signal indicator and brake warning light 7/79-9/75.
