"If I were rebuilding my 40 again, I would use SM465/Orion and be done with it."

Cruiserdrew, sounds like this is a great way to go. Maybe the weak T.C. is why Marlin stopped making that toybox for the 40 1 pc. T.C.?

I don't know what Marlin's motivations are one way or the other. I can say that the Toybox is a GREAT product, and more people should use it. It's expensive to get it all sorted out though, and in hard times, that limits the market a lot. If you are staying with Land Cruiser axles, and a split case, the Toybox is awesome.

The problem with FJ40s is the short wheelbase, so it makes using 1 transmission and 1 transfercase, desirable. Doubler options like a Toybox are hard to fit due to length. So a heavy duty, low geared transmission like SM465 + Orion is pretty awesome and a short package.

However, if the plan is really big tires and really heavy axles, I think domestic iron is probably preferable. For a heavy weight 1 ton axled FJ40, it would be hard to beat SM465 + Atlas. In a wagon NV4500 + Atlas. All it takes is cash.

Just think of your LC xfr case as a driveline fuse, it will go before the Toybox - don't ask me how I know.

a 3 speed case in my 60 buggy came apart before i got it from a popped rear drive shaft then trying to make a under cut climb with FWD only.

has a case saver now and so far so good.

I love my toybox!

I am gonna go to a 14 bolt rear and keeping my SM420 - toybox - 3 speed case. It should be just fine, I worry more about the 3 speed case than anything, but hopefully it will all be fine and the case saver will hold it true.

"I'll fix it once it breaks" is a great line...just as long as you're not in front of me on the trail when it breaks, we'll be all right. Better get the t-case saver!

:)

Let's see some pics on your progress!!

I just got my Non-USA H41 and Splitcase today....so I'm following in your footsteps-kinda.
