Remember - tire manufacturing, like swimsuits and ski gear, is season dependent. There are so many types and sizes of tires that manufacturers plan a run to make sure they have the right tires for the peak of demand. So, winter tires are typically sold out in the spring and summer tires are sold out in the fall. Off road tires are usually sold out until spring, no matter where you live.

Except this is all tires. And it's been going on for more than just the fall.

In case you haven't noticed there's an issue with most products. New cars. Food. Electronics. Try and buy a gear set for an 80 series land cruiser.
Go to the store and find 15w40 oil. In any brand.

Pretty typical annually for tires and wheels to be in short supply at the beginning of the year due to how production scheduling is handled in China. Add in the pandemic issues and associated government BS and you have increased back orders. I know back in December when I ordered my matching BFG KM3 spare for my pickup that I got the very last tire in that size in the entire country and it appears to still be out of stock.

Back in January I ordered toyo AT3 285/70-17on my new Alapha Equip rims. Got a email last week from tire rack that they won’t be available until late June. Then tried for Michelin defenders (also June to July) and wildpeaks (possibly May). I’ll need them early to mid May when I take my studs off. My only option ended up duratrack or KO2s. I had KO2s before. Although not my favorite tire, nothing bad to say. And they were $300 less then the Toyo for the set. I’m glad the Rims were on close out otherwise I would have waited until March or April and likely been in worse shape for options.

Huh...I just picked up 4 sets of BFG 315/70R17 LRE's at the distribution warehouse. Took 11 days to get them in from California. Perhaps Discount Tire is leveraging their recent purchase of TireRack dot com into being a bean counting catastrophe instead of a tire shop. aka Les Schwab 2.0 RIP Les....

If you have anyone in your inner circle within the service & repair industry, who can get in contact with a distributor like ATD, etc. Try that route. Point of sale retail is getting their stock dead f'n last. Large resellers, large fleets, dedicated accounts, we are getting tires. Not same day, but within a couple weeks at the most. Just FYI

You might want to call and confirm it's the tires that are holding your order up, and not the wheels. I was just quoted 3-5 days for the size BFG you ordered back in November that your retailer is telling you are another 8-10 weeks out.

Yea, wheels are on crazy backorder. I have a Method for my RAM that has been on order since December and they don't expect it until early April.

Bought tires this last week, and I've been watching lately. Lots of shortages and prices keep rising. I pulled the trigger on some 285/70R17 Firestone Destination XTs, as they were available and at a great discount comparatively. I'll post on those later. But needless to say lots of shortages and prices are going up. We're planning a big trip this summer, and my Ridge Grapplers might not make it there and back, they're pretty long in the tooth...

In a quandary about this. Prepping to leave on a 2 week road trip on 3/13, heading south so I was planning to swap the snows back off to the summer tires/rims (RWs with KO2s). These tires are getting thin, and one of the 5 has a significant plug near the edge of the tread, so I'm nervous about running it, even as the spare.

Was considering going to a different brand and now that I have the slight lift installed (BP-51s) I was thinking about going up to 285/75R17. Nothing available for months, anywhere.

So should I just replace the plugged tire with the same size for now? I can get those.

Update: Called TireRack, sent the rep that photo. Not fixable, not safe, as he said the nail that I pulled out may have penetrated between the sidewall and belts. It may hold air now, but air can get under the sidewall and balloon it out, leading to a sudden failure.

Best/quickest option we could do is buy 2 new tires in the same size I have now (KO2 285/70R17), then shave them down to about 10/32" to match the existing tires. I didn't even know this was possible to do, but apparently they are the only place that can do it? ~$600 for both tires shipped, I'll have them by Friday. He said take the best 3 tires of the 5, put 2 on the front, then put the shaved new tires on the rear. Hoping this will get me though this summer season, then replace all 5 in Spring 2023 with the size/brand I want.

All this for one stupid nail on the road.

Pretty sure our center diff can handle that size difference with ease. What's the total height of the new and used tires? I seem to remember the torsen being good with 2-3%..

@KLF I'd use that damaged one solely as a spare to get you out to civilization, make sure you have your patch kit on board, and take it easy. What're the odds you'll need a spare?

Impending road trip is all highway/pavement, NH to FL and back with a lot of stops and diversions, prolly 4000 miles in 2 weeks. Lots of high speed. Tires are something I don't like to worry about. If I'm gonna carry a full-size spare, I want it to be a reliable asset, not a liability.

But you are correct, the chances are very very low I will need it.

Why not just buy one replacement? Or, just run it as a spare?
