Hi all,

There was always a special place in my heart for 40s ever since I was a kid. My best friend's dad had an import auto repair shop in North Arlington, NJ. It was called E.G. Automotive, I later found out that the E.G. stood for "Extra Good". He had an FJ40 as a plow truck for his lot and I spent a lot of fun times in it. Looking back it had to be a 60s or early 70s model with a "three on the tree". It was completely rotted out to the point where you could see the snow and slush below you, but it still ran like a champ.

I didn't appreciate it too much at the time, but whenever I came across one it brought back memories of how tough and fun that truck was to drive. Well in late 2016 I was contemplating getting one as a project but decided that an 80 series would be more reasonable and something that I could use as a DD. I'm starting this thread because I regret not creating one for my 80 since I put a lot of work into it. By the way, that truck was on life support when I bought it and this site is the only reason that truck is alive today. It has been my DD for the past 14 months with zero issues and 260k on the clock. I appreciate all the time and effort mudders put in to document their knowledge.

Unfortunately the 80 didn't come close to getting the 40 out of my brain. I monitored craigslist nationally, this site as well as ebay for months. I even made some offers on a few but for one reason or another they didn't pan out. I finally came across a (early) 1970 located out in New Mexico. It pretty much spent the last decade sitting in Arizona; although, it spent some of its life in Colorado. It drew me in because it is complete for the most part - original front seats (a mess but all there), rear long jump seats, hardtop, original frame and engine. Cool looking patina too :)

Pros:
Pretty much complete (missing original rear lights and bumperettes)
Good Compression across all cylinders
Minimal rust - frame is really solid and floors, doors are good.

Cons:
Rear sill is rusted - will probably do patch panels for the rear quarters too
Not running...yet (need a carb rebuild, fuel system gone through since it's been sitting for a long time)
Need a complete brake overhaul

My plan(s):

Original plan "Just get it rolling...safely" - Carb rebuild, new hoses, tune up, gaskets, new rear sill, quarter panel patch panels, brakes (discs, booster, dual circuit master), tall and skinny tires and rims (welded), reupholster seats and clean up some of the surface rust on the body and frame.

Alternate plan "My OCD is kicking in" - I just want to tear the thing down! I already started emailing sand blasters to have the body blasted and primed. Once the body is off I will have complete access to the frame which will allow me to blast it myself and make it look brand spankin' new.

I'm really not sure what to do. I can go either way on this. If anybody has been in this position and has any advice, I'd appreciate it. Originally I just wanted to drive a rolling relic but now I'm getting an urge to do a bit of a restoration.

In the meantime I'm just going to continue cleaning up the engine and fuel system, getting it sorted out and running. I will be sure to post the good, bad and ugly.

As I mentioned in the "Patina Appreciation" thread, this photo has been censored due to the indecency of the bezel.

:flipoff2: Welcome. And we are going to need a lot more photos. We also want to hear about all of the prior owner mods you have to fix.

Rob,
I feel your pain as I’m in the same boat. I consider mine a rolling rebuild. I’ve got a 71 and have been upgrading and rebuilding little items so I can still have the pleasure of driving it. I’ve put disc brakes up front and rebuilt the front and rear axles. I’m going to drive it for a year and then decide it’s journey!

Hi Rob,

Thanks for posting the comments about your build up. I am starting in on a 1969 FJ40 and began the tear down last night. I had "grand plans" of transplanting a 3FE and 5 speed, but I think I am going to take a more original restoration approach. Also, I was thinking along the same lines as you regarding fixing a little here and a little there until I collected enough parts to perform the engine swap so I could keep it running, but the urge to get everything cleaned up and tuned up is too strong to resist. I look forward to hearing about what you decided to do. It is hard to want to drive one and have it sitting in pieces in the garage, but it is also hard to drive one that you know needs spit, polish and elbow grease.

More to come as far as photos go.

For now I will leave you with just a few of the wasp nests that I've found, most of which were on the inside of the cab. I also found a spider from New Mexico that was not happy with the relocation to NJ.

I'm leaning towards doing the same. Just getting it roadworthy and enjoy it.

What route did you take as far as your front disc conversion and are you happy with the choice?

Great rig ! Congrats !

As advice on your question :

Restoring it is nice to do, but Driving it is the Best !!

Just wanted to add a few more pictures of what I'm starting with. It seems as though Wolverine was the PO (see front seat pics). The good news is that the only major rust, granted I'm from the northeast so this is subjective, is the rear sill and lower quarters. I ordered the necessary body parts from CCOT and will learn how to weld. My cousin dropped off his miller welder for me today so I'm excited to start practicing. The floor has surface rust, mostly on the driverside and in the toolbox. I'll work on sanding/grinding it down and treating it. I was expecting the pan below the fuel tank to be a mess but it is actually the cleanest part of the floor! All of the doors are solid along with the rockers. I’ll continue to clean it up and post pictures of the progress.

I’m also sourcing the parts and placing orders for Toyota front disc brake knuckles and a rear disc conversion.

Plans of the next week are to continue to clean it up, pressure test the gas tank and radiator and get the carb rebuilt.

I'm right there with you too.....I found a '71-ish (has '71 VIN, but '73 tub). Also a NM car, original paint, same rear sill rust you mentioned.

Mine has the 4 spd. and 2F out of a '76, and I'm planning a resto-mod project with my two sons. I'm trying to just get it moving under its own power for now, and just use it around town for the next year or two. Once my boys are a little older, and can turn wrenches themselves, I'll do the full frame off build.....

I've been working on taking parts off for cleaning, blasting and painting. We had a couple of warmer days this week so I was able to push her outside for a power washing. This didn't do much for the interior but really helped clean up the under carriage and frame which had a lot of fine dust/dirt around it.

I also ordered a bunch of seals (side cover, valve cover, timing chain cover seals, etc) and many, many, many other parts. I dropped off the stock carb at a local trusted carburetor shop so he is working on that.

My main goal is to get the engine and fuel system back in top shape. Unfortunately the fuel tank had a couple of rust spots with pinhole leaks. I attempted to use JB Weld tankweld to seal them. It seemed to work on the one hole that I found but then another one showed up. I think that I'm just going to order a new CCOT one but still need to do more research.
