I haven’t had a build thread in many years but have been looking at getting an FJ40 recently and came across one on FB. It was only 1757 miles away in the southern California mountains so I took a chance and with the help of several in community convincing me it was very solid, clean and mostly original. I pulled the trigger and, fingers crossed, it shows up just as I’m expecting.
My goal is to clean and preserve the original paint and patina, ditch the non-original hard top and drive it around in the “go topless” fashion.
I’ll be slowly adding things like original soft top doors and bows, a trollhole soft top and some Coral interior from SOR. Going for a period correct preservation of as much originality as I can save.

Love it

‘69. Side marker lights started on the 1970 model.

Check out the patina preservation thread. In my observation those green trucks clean up real nice.

Yes, been watching Nolen and his rigs. This was manufactured July 69. Titled 70.
I’m excited to see how it turns out. I was just playing with fluid film and penitrol on my 80 and 100 to see what I like better.

Dang this is nice one.

Nice rig and hell of a fair price from what I remember. I saw that one a few weeks back and am glad it found a good home!
Yea, I was surprised it sat available for so long. It’s exactly what I was looking for and exactly the budget I want to be in so I could spend the money cleaning it up and replacing the consumable items. New soft top, floor mats, shocks, tires. I was offered spring green soft top doors from a local cruiser enthusiast that helps me make the decision to go for this one. He was awesome answering my questions and steering me away from bad decisions. I may also have found white soft top bows, not ideal but better than red.

Quick update, I’ve found most of the parts I think I’m going to need.
Having trouble finding factory soft top bows. Preferably spring green, would also look at white or beige.
If anyone has a set or knows of a set I’d appreciate the heads up.

Around twenty five years ago picked up a set of OEM bows, doors and Kayline vinyl top. They were off a 69 FJ40. The top was interesting because the back now was a little shorter and the top matched the shorter now and windows were tinted. Have never come across one that had these shorter now. Have 67 and 73 bows. I assume the bow was cut to match the vinyl top but not sure. Maybe Mark @65swb45 would have a clue. I can not find any listing showing a different bow in 69. :meh:

My 9/67 FJ40 had grey seat covers when O bought it in 1974. Coral was gone in the US at least after 67. Personally think grey matches green better than Coral.

Started the clean up process.
First I just used soap and water on everything I could get to as I’m stuck working in my small 2 car garage due to the winter weather. Then I used CLR to clean off under the hood and all of the frame.
I forgot the before but got the half way and after.

I also have been playing with fluid film and Penitrol to see what product I liked better. Fluid Film looks a shade darker but stays wet and attracts dust. Penitrol drys hard and based on my use (car shows) I think I’m going to use Penitrol on the painted surfaces so I can use my quick detailed spray to clean it before shows etc.
Little before and after on the original plate.
