Please keep us posted. I'm waiting to install mine because I'm still weighing the pros/cons.

is it a recomendation to go with HIR bulbs AND the slee harness??

well now at least i have one headlight working, and i think i might have one bummed out relay.

i guess ill head to the auto parts store and try to scrounge up a relay and see if that fixes the DS light.

Somehow tonight the check engine light wet off as well... i hope it stays off.

cheers for the help lads

Both on one side working? The low beams are switched with one relay and the highbeams with another. So if the light comes on, then the relay works. So the problem is elsewhere.

I think the jury is out on that...

I have both and hope to spend some time putting in the HIRs first and doing a comparison to stock. Then I plan to add the Slee harness with stock bulbs and do a comparison. Finally, I'll put in both the harness and the HIRs and do a third comparison.

From what I've read just adding in the Slee harness makes a significant difference...So much so that some think it isn't really necessary to go with the HIRs (especially now that you can't get 'em for $10/bulb from JD).

I've had Christo's light harness for years with no problems what so ever. Good connections are essential to an electrical job. Twisting bare wires together does not count as a good connection. Crimp connections are always suspect to me in anything as high wattage as headlights. Solder connections as much as possible. Connect the supply wire directly to the battery. Make sure your grounds are tight and clean.

I have had HIR bulbs for a couple of years. I put one in the left and left the original bulb in the right. The only difference I can tell is when the headlights are shining on the garage door, the HIR bulb has a poor patern. The original bulb is nice and tight. The HIR bulb is diffused in a wider patern. I can tell no difference in brightness. I never bothered to put the other HIR bulb in. It sets on the shelf 2 years later.

ok so this morning, both bulbs are out again.....FRIG

yeah i think i got the relays figured out. its not the relays.

Im just confused cause the lights worked for 2 weeks...then now im having problems......

I had some cheap aftermarket 85w bulbs in using a Slee harness and melted one of the connectors slightly. I've since trashed those and installed the 55w HIRs, used grease in teh conenctors, and haven't had any issues.

so is it the bulb end of the connector prongs that gets melted, or the slee end of the connector prongs that get melted???

HA HA... i trouble shot it!!

it was the relay that wasnt working. It was clicking, but when tested with a multimeter, it wasnt working

off to the parts store for a new relay

keep us posted if you find the relay at a parts store...

I had a problem with mine at one point, and i couldn't find a replacement for it... ended up ordering new wires from slee since my old ones were old and installed improperly...

If you do find it, would you mind posting a part #?

ditto... any update on the relay? christo did tell me to switch out one of the low beam ones to see if that is it... i gess i need to not be so lazy.

On earlier harnesses the connectors that plugged into the vehicle harness had really thin pins. We have since upgraded those to be ticker. Probably for the last year or more.

I have one of the much older harnesses with a newer driving light harness installed. should i upgrade to the newer harness? my current install is a rats nest anyway...

answering my own hijack here ... i switched the relay with a working one... that was it.

Christo - i cant find a place in calgary to get a new relay... is it possible to have a new one shipped to canada?

First of all, this thread is still relevant. It's 2024, I just attempted to install Slee's (updated and improved, black) headlight harness in my 80, and I ran into problems. So (1) to any other electrical system novices out there (besides me), IT'S IMPORTANT TO RE-INSTALL THE GROUND WIRES FROM THE ORIGINAL HARNESS along with the new harness ground wires. I did not do this, and hoo-boy, did the system go wonky, and I think I may have damaged one of the solenoids in the SLEE harness (the one for the brights). After I got a clue and (cleaned up and) re-installed the original ground wires, the system is working pretty good--turn signals and reg headlights are good, just no brights (and don't hear the brights solenoid click). I'm going to swap that with a new one but I think that may fix my problems.

I don't know that I would go chopping up my wiring for this in 2024. there are plenty of solid LED options that don't draw much current.
My prob with brights wasn't the solenoid; I'd shorted out one of the 15 amp headlight fuses in the box under the hood. Once I'd sorted that out, Slee harness works great! All my issues were completely my mistakes.
