Yes thats probably perfect! Thank you

The 2002 does not have any buttons on the wheel. The wiring is different between the 2002 and 2003. That is when they went to the new dash. What are you trying to do?

That's exactly right, I'm trying to go from 2002 with no steering wheel controls to 2003 with controls. I have the new 2003 steering wheel with volume up/down, next/last, and mode button. The cruise control also appears to have an extra wire over the 2002. I'll need to put a new clockspring in along wiring harness cut out of a 2003 and splice into the harness that currently comes out of the back of my 2002 clockspring.

Below is the 2002 wheel. There are only two wires coming from the cruise control to the clock spring, and and additional ground wire that plugs into the airbag bomb. (single layer plug, 3 wires, only 3 slots used going into the clock spring)

This is the 2003+ model, you'll see the plug is 2 layers, roughly 12 slots, so needs a different clock spring.

This is the rear of the 2002 clock spring showing the three wires coming out. I'll need to splice into these three for the new cruise control and for all the new audio controls that will be coming out of the new clock spring, I"ll use the idatalink maestro to get the signal to my Pioneer head unit.

The airbag wiring will not be a problem, I can use either the single stage or the dual stage bomb on the new steering wheel.

@jerryb used a harness to integrate the controls into a new deck for his 05. Do you know what circuit the wires Are for in the 02?

Getting the controls into the deck should be straight forward using the Idatalink device, I just to to get them into and out of a new clockspring. Not sure if I can buy that harness or if I need to find a junker 03+ to cut it out.

Not sure what you're asking about the circuit/wires?

I thought you were trying to splice a 03 steering wheel into a 02 circuit to control the deck. I dont think the wires are there. I am probably of no help. I would check car-part.com for a salvage one near you and cut the harness out.

Yeah what I"ll have to do is get a new harness (like what would be in the back of the 03 clockspring) and tie those wires into the idatalink. That's relatively straight forward. What I don't have total figured out is the cruise control swap. My 02 has two wires coming out of it, the 03 has three coming out of it.

You can get a lot of good data from 4 runner forums, they put the wheel controls in older models, swap wheels, etc.

OK, I'm going to swap out the NAV system on a 2002 LX470 with the 3 knob rotary controls from an LC. But I have a question:
The plugs from the 3 knob are missing the wires for the rear heat/AC. I guess the LC donor did not have this. How could I add those missing wires for the LC plugs? Could I stick in a very thin wire (single conductor phone/network wire) into the 3 knob plugs and then splice those into the LX connectors? If I don't hook up the rear AC will the rest of it still work? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

So you got the pigtail plugs but they are missing the wires? If that is the case you can purchase the wires from Toyota but they are pricey and re-pin the plugs.

Any way to take them out of another vehicle's plug and replace them? I could go to Pick n' Pull and take out a set from an RX300 and try to remove them. (the colors don't have to be correct)

EDIT: I found a video on re-pinning. It's not the best video, but it looks like what I'm after

It sounds like I am hooked up the same as you, except your sound worked and mine didn’t. Do you remember how you hooked up the Metra harness? Did you have to do anything at the amp end with the setup you are describing here? I must have something miswired... I wonder if I wired in something that I shouldn’t have from the Metra harness.

Answering my own question - this didn’t work because of the Mark Levinson amp; but it seems like the harness has worked for others without the ML factory amp.

@chogunn did you ever try with the TYTO-01 harness mentioned here Is there a way to replace 2001 LX470 Mark Levinson stereo system?

Also, I saw you ended up completely deleting the ML system... when you did that, do you lose the tweeters up by the dash/windshield?

On another car, I experimented with component speakers but they were located down too far by my hips/footwell and I never got much clarity because the highs are much more directional than bass. I noticed immediately when I bought my LX 470 the difference with having tweeters aimed right at my ears. So I'm concerned that if deleting the ML system results in losing those tweeters, that I will lose the treble clarity.

Well, the good news is you have the pigtails, and that's what people tend to have a hard time sourcing. Now you just need the LX digital controller. Sell that unit and keep the pigtails. The LX unit will also match your dash as is.

While I'm here, figured I'd make a list and part numbers that I used to do my nav delete and install a new AA/Carplay unit in a 98-02 LX470. Hopefully it helps someone.

Awesome write up. I am considering shamelessly copying the entire build. Quick question, after a few months of use, are you happy with the new head unit and speakers?

Thank you all for figuring this stuff out!
Finally had someone help me through the delete and it’s awesome. One issue we are having is the manual antenna button—it doesn’t seem to be working —per the print out , we have 7e and 19e connected. Anyone know of a workaround?

Sorry for the delayed response, I missed this when you posted it a few weeks back. I did not try the TYTO-01. It may have worked, but I think I was so frustrated at the whole thing that deleting the whole stock sound seemed like what I really wanted to do. I don’t regret it, I sold everything but the speakers and came out in the green on the project.

I, sloppily, rigged the tweeters that came with my new speakers up where the stock tweeters were. I need to check at some point and see if the electrical tape system I rigged up is holding up, and maybe fix it permanently with FiberFix or something. The head unit I bought also does some weird adjustments to try and rig the sound ‘up higher’ or something like that. I’m no audiophile. I think it sounds way better Now.
