Good problem solving! Can you feed the bolts in from the outside with the nuts on the inside? Then you won't have to cut the bolts and the bolt head is still probably lower profile than the nut.

Thanks Stump! I was determined to make it work.

Mike - Its not a failure until you quit trying to solve the problem. Its just an obstacle to overcome. You might consider a Borgeson "DD Steering U Joint" ... Glen had to remove the steering column and cut off the factory rag joint. Then drilled the column, he installed a grade 8 bolts, I had it tack welded back for extra support. He also installed a lower steering column bearing on the firewall to stabilize the column due to the universal joint. Works like a charm for me. HTH

Erik thanks for all your help and encouragement!! I really needed it!

I just looked at the pics again. When I checked them out earlier ( and responded ) I was looking at them on my phone. Now I'm using a bigger screen and I'd have to say that's the worst mis-alignment I've seen. It's somewhat perplexing since the cruiser supposedly has good body mounts and hadn't been in an accident....... Along with the fact that vertically it looks just about perfect.
Mike, could you try yo install the pitman arm and relay rid to see how much clearance you gave between them and the frame? That should help narrow things down.
Hth

Georg thanks for all your help!

1) turn the bolts around so the nuts are inside the frame rail.
2) in some of the pics it looks like the ps pedestal might be making contact with your shackle reversal hanger. That would explain the box offset. Can you take a look at that? The pedestal should be flush with the frame there should not be a gap at all.

I did check the pedestal where it is making contact with the shackle reversal hanger and it actually clears it by a hair, the pedestal is flush with the frame rail, I will turn the bolts around to clear the link rod. What do you think about the two washers making such a huge difference on the PS box angle?

Mike,

I just saw this... glad you got it all worked out!!

Mine lined up perfectly when I installed the Billy Dorry pedestal, from Georg. But, someone had already installed power steering on mine.

I changed pedestals because I was afraid of the shoddy weld on the old pedestal.

BTW with exhaust headers, it was nearly impossible for me to insert the bolts from the outside of the frame and successfully start the nuts, without removing the headers.

I installed them, from the inside of the frame, by running some twine, tying it to the threaded end of the bolts and pulling it back thru the bolt holes... Just like fishing electrical wire in a wall.

I was fortunate to have a variety of swivels for my ratchet... I was able to hold the bolt heads, inside the frame, as I tightened the nuts.

Hey Danny!

Are you still in Austin? How are Gunner and Chester doing? Any pics of them together? Thanks for the information on your install, I like the thread/twine trick good ole American ingenuity!!
I'm still plugging along with my PS install off and on due to chilly temps here in WA, it's difficult working on cold steel in a cold shop, however, things are looking up weather wise. I'll be reversing the bolts on the pedestal bolt heads outside the frame and nuts inside, luckily I don't have headers and there's ample space for my fat hands. Thanks for all your help!:hillbilly:

Still in Austin... Not enjoying all the rain, but they need all they can get!

Already finished the deck work and working on a couple of mods with my Son-in-Law, on their trailer.

We're probably gonna start home around April 6th - a couple of weeks longer than we planned, but Dianna wants to go to the semi-annual antique, etc. market at Round Top, TX on Apr 1-4... Unless it looks like bad weather for it.

It took Gunner a couple of weeks to get over his fear of hurting Cheater... I don't think much could hurt him though... He's a tough nut!!

Chester has doubled in size, in four weeks, and gained 9 lbs, in the last three weeks.

Since you asked... Chester playing with my Daughter's Border Collie

How about running a smaller belt? The power steering kit from JTO 13 years ago included a narrow belt drive pulley on the saginaw pump.
I've never had a problem with using the smaller belt even being driven by a regular FJ40 large belt pulley.

Thank you very much. what I looked for. I want to prepare all details at first. and then to dismantle and establish.
Please post some pictures of what you are doing and also a picture of your FJ40.

Welcome to the MUD family!!

Of course, I will only gather everything, I will make the photoreport. But I lack the bracket pump yet. And pulley

I've been browsing this thread a bit and want to throw in another idea.

When trying to add PS to our 72, I made the water pump pulley a double. We had a 92 parts 80 taking up space in the yard and I grabbed the PS pump and bracket. It bolted up nicely to the 1f and the pulley lines up perfectly with the double water pump and crank pulleys. I get that your mounting the pump left of the engine, but this is a possibility for the right side.

No pics now because I'm away for work. I can post pics this weekend if it helps.
