Is there a significant difference (loss) in "seat of the pants" power when going from the stock 275/70R16 LTX to a 285/75R16 AT tire? Also, will the bigger tire fit on a stock 97 alloy rim?

Any tips appreciated.

no and yes :D

you will feel a difference in handling with the bigger tire and maybe a tiny power difference. the stock rims are 16 x8 so you can put at least 315s on if you want, but 295s are the largest that will fit on a stock suspension.

I did not feel much of a power loss on mine. I live in SC where it is flat though and I never really go about 1/4 throttle. To me it was not a big deal because I drive like an old man in my cruiser.

When i first got my 80 back after getting the 285's on i did notice a slight loss in power but i got used to it in about a day and the look/performance of the 285's over the stock michelins was well worth the little decrease in power.

Very good info, guys. Thanks very much. I am looking at a set of Toyo Open Country AT's tomorrow, and was wanting some feedback on the size. It's my daily driver, but I take it to the woods, too...........

Like the others said, I didn't notice a power difference, and it fits great on the stock wheels.

same here, no significant difference noted with my MT/Rs

Sheez, course not.

Bigger = Better.

Some 285s are smaller than the anticiapted size and some are bigger. The 285s I am running are almost 34" with 50 psi in'em. Each of'em weigh about 77 lbs. As far as I remember my 35" BFG weighed about 70 lbs. I didn't really notice any power loss. I do have the TRD air filter but I don't think that would make any difference.

I didn't really notice anything. Definitly a no brainer going with 285's

check out the Nitto Tera Grappler AT. I'm pretty sure Nitto tires are made by Toyo. The Nitto's are a little less $$$ from what I've seen. I've got them and love them. Getting ready to put a set on my wifes 4rnr.

Thanks, guys, for the good info. Will tire chains still fit and clear the wheel wells? This is a stock height LX450.....

Tom

Tire chains are normally made to fit tire sizes they are made for.

You will need to swap out the speedo drive gear to correct the error - Christo Slee sells one - it's an easy 10 minute job.

http://www.sleeoffroad.com/products/products_drivetrain_main.htm

"The most common size tire installed to gain extra clearance is 285/75R16. When the diameter of this tire is calculated, it comes to 32.8". The stock tire size is 275/70R16, which equated to a 31.2" diameter. So when installed the larger tires, your speedometer will read 57 mph when you are traveling 60 mph. Using the correction gear, your speedometer will read 58.9 mph."

And no, your chains will probably not fit the new tires. I can't comment on wheel well clearance since I have a 3 inch lift, but with the right tires you will never need chains for winter driving.

I phrased my question poorly - I know the chains need to be a different size when going to larger tires. My question is - will tire chains, when installed on the larger tires, clear the wheel wells. Also, running in the backcountry mud & snow here in Idaho, good tires or not, chains is an option that I'd like to maintain, good tires or not.....

sorry to thread jack but I am also debating on 285/75/16's. My question is are there a ton of advantages over 265/75/16's? I have searched and I cannot find any feedback on the 265's. They will still be an inch taller than the stock tires and a little skinnier which is fine by me (maybe I will have better power and gas mileage with the taller skinnier tire--will I? I don't rock krawl or anything just basic trail/expedition driving if this helps. BTW I am sold on Revo's and will be purchaing them somewhat soon. Thanks a ton for any insight.

I have the 285/75/16 Firestone Destination MTs on mine. I have had them on for about 2 months. There is definitely a slight powerloss when daily driving, but where I noticed it more was in towing my boat. It seems to need more gas to maintain speed and it seems to search a bit more for the right gear. This really isn't a big deal if you never tow anything.

Also, the Destinations are capable of being studded. You could do that instead of tire chains. Just something to consider

I didn't feel any power loss after putting on my Revo 285's. I did install Christo's speedo gear correction. With stock 275's my speedo was just slightly slow when comparing it to my GPS. With the new speedo gear to 'correct' the tire/speedo differential, I'm now dead on with my speedo and GPS.

I did purchase new chains and they look like they'll clear w/o any issues at all, but I haven't had to use them yet.
