Can tow rigs play too?

97 Ram 3500 Ext Cab Long Bed 4wd Dually
5.9 12v Cummins, Intake(BHAF), straight pipe, and pump mods.
5spd NV4500HD, D60/D80 4.10 gears.

Just measured my second tank, first tank: 13.0 MPG(junk 29.5" tall tires) and 13.3MPG (new 31.75" tall tires), the second tank included a 140 miles towing an 85 4runner, and 30 miles towing my Civic.

The 4.10's are killing me.
I scored some 33" tall tires to help get the R's down, but have to buy 19.5" wheels to get them on the truck. :D

Vehicule: 09/1993 Toyota Hilux surf (jdm 4runner) with a 1KZ-TE diesel engine, 4 spd auto tranny, 4/10 diff ratio and 31" A/T tires (OEM size).

did put 55 000km on it mixed highway/city all across Canada,
average highway speed 100-110km/h, average consumption 10-13L/100km
(wind speed and pulling my 4,5'X8' trailer once in a while)
"normal" city driving, average consumption 12-14L/100km.

since I did a lot of "mixed" driving on every tanks my overall average is about 20-24/MPG...
I manage to get 26-27/MPG on highway on flat surfaces only while crossing central Canada.
and once as low as 17/MPG pulling a 18' trailer with an another toyota truck on top.

just install a OME "lift kit" along with a ARB winch bumper and a M8000 winch and some 265/75/R16 M/T tires... (32")

I expect my mileage to drop a bit but hopefully my little "torque monster";) engine will not suffer much from the added weight,
and greater tires size with a more "restrictive" thread.............

will let you know after few fill ups!!! hope to get the roads "salt free" here in Quebec somewhere in April...
thats when my surf will hit the road again!:)

I get 20mpg on highway from my 12H-T. I got 10 mpg on the Alaska Cruiser Trek. Lovin' the range for off-road excursions. (The gassers were getting about 3-4mpg.)

I have 35" tires, 5" lift, 4.11 diffs, max boost set at 12psi. For more details, see the link in my signature.

Mileage: l/100km 10.22 Highway best but on average 10.5L/100kms highway.
Around town 11.5 to 12L/100kms

Special Notes: Amsoil in the diffs, transfer case and transmission, fuel conditioner with every tank.
Dino rotella 10w/30 in the engine. I don't drive fast on the highway, I follow speed limits and get passed lots.

This is a great thread - cool to see the similarities and differences.

I just finished a trip through the mountains in an HJ60 auto, 4.11 gears on 31" tires.

Odometer says 522km/75L = 14.4L/100km. Corrected for 31" tires would be 13.1L/100km using 10 percent as the adjustment for the change in odo reading due to larger than stock tires.

I am assuming that I am correct on this adjustment and would love it if someone could chime in to confirm this. If it is correct, I am thrilled with this mileage!

HJ61 Sahara, 12HT with auto. 10.9lt-100klm Caboolture to Tyndale and 11.8l/100klm Tyndale to Nabiac. 31" Cooper HT tyres, 3" exhaust and the rest stock stock stock

82 BJ60 w/ 3B, Turbo, 2.5" exhaust, H55f 5 speed, 2.5 OME lift, 285/75/16 (32") AT tires, stock gearing at 3.7.

Just did a trip from near sea level to over 4000 feet elevation than down to 3000 and return. Did some wheeling in there too but probably only 50km worth. Total was 600 KM and I used 73 litres of fuel. Works out to 12.2l/100km or 19.3 mpg. Not to bad as I was fully loaded and I'm not easy on the skinny peddle. Much of the trip was traveling at 110km/h with only the steapest hills dropping down to 90-100km/h.

Hey Kim, you can check it out here Tire size calculator just put in the original tire size for your truck and what you have now, should give you the ratio. Mine calculate out to 9.6%, that's if I have the stock tire size right (235/75/15) but I've been reading and some say the stock tire size is 225/75/15 which would work out to 11.9% difference...

Just made a trip to 100Mile House and back in the 1HD-T converted FZJ80 (I guess I can call it an HDJ80 now).

Slee 4" lift, 255/85R16 Toyo M-55's, ARB Bullbar, Hanna sliders and rear bumper, Cruisin Skidplate, Safari Snorkel, 1HD-T/A442, 3" Rage Chromacoated exhaust, ceramic coated exhaust manifold and turbo.

539 miles, using 104 liters: into the number cruncher and converted 6% for tire size = 11.32l/100kms or 20.78 usmpg or 24.95impg.

Very rough calculation for around town driving (three tanks of fuel before the road trip) saw this rig go from 200miles per tank of gasoline to 300miles per tank of diesel (uncorrected numbers).

9.15km/l .... 21.52mpg on the last fill up.
Mixed driving ..some days with AC on.
My engine is stock (1HD-T) but I have a large aftermarket stainless steel exhaust.
My odometer readings are accurate as I use the Yellow Box speedo recalibrator.
6 inch lift with ECB Roof rack and Bullbar and an OEM winch. Stock gear with 315's BFG KM2.

City: 20mpg
Highway: 23mpg

I was expecting better on the highway, I'm hoping adding cruise control will make a difference. I'm pretty happy with the city economy currently.

Our local emissions monitoring company has a fuel consumption/comparison tool on their website and I plugged in the BJ40 and BJ 60 for interests sake. Here are the numbers;

BJ40-60mileage.jpg

Hard to read but they are 11.3L/100km and 10.7L/100km respectively.

And the HJ60, auto and manual;

HJ60Mileage.jpg

Which are HJ60 auto, 14.4L/100km and HJ60 5spd, 11.3L/100km

1980 Mercedes 300SD, 27.7 mpg on my last tank.

Just made the same trip to 100Mile House and back in the HJ61.

Belton 50mm lift, ARB bullbar, Safari Snorkel, A440 with Wholesale Automatics billet TC and VB, Cooper 255/85R16's in steelies, 2.5" exhaust, turbo set to dump at 12psi, no adjustments to fuel.

553 miles (890kms), using 99 liters: into the number cruncher = 11.10l/100kms or 21.19 usmpg or 25.45impg.

Drove it hard on the way up (and there is a lot of uphill) and used 54liters for 448 kms. On the return trip I did not drive it as hard and used 45 liters for 442 kms. On the return leg that works out to 10.2L/100km.
