94 fzj80 that green/blue paint with purle flakes in it that looks black at night.

Best;
geting the 80
cutting up the Trud

worst;
giving the wife the 80
rust

94 Green One

Best

BFG MUD's (good bang for the buck)
Removing Running Boards (free)
Removing Center Caps (free)
CDL Switch (fairly cheap)
Cobra CB w/ Weather Band
Pintle Hook (good pull point)
OME Lift (again, good bang for the buck)

Worst

Used ARB (no offense, buyer beware)
Hand Throttle (really don't use it but it's cool)

Need

Lockers (will be calling Cruiserparts...James, right?)
Warn 8274
Rear Kaymar with dual tire carriers

Best bang per buck:
1) diffs, tranny, xfer case breathers - $20 in hose saving $$$
2) CDL switch & pin-7 mod - $50, why didn’t it come this way??
3) George’s xfer skid plate (or Slee’s) – cheap protection
4) Aux fuel tank – again, why didn’t it come this way??
5) Fuel injectors rebuilt & balanced - $150, big difference after 100K miles
6) OME springs & shocks
7) Sliders
8) Tires
9) George’s LEDs
10) &nbsp:Dual battery setup
11) Supercharger

Lamest:
1) cupholder - $50, that’s just stupid. Of course I couldn’t help myself
2) K&N air filter – refer to #1
3) Replacing fuel filter – this takes way too long, the one you take out looks pristine, and there’s absolutely no change in anything after the new one is in???
4) Cleaning the truck in any way shape or form, in or out – it just gets dirty again!!!!

Not in any real order
1. OME and 305/70s not too much $$ compared to other lifts
2. center console - cheap, makes driving way better
3. sliders - don't know how much you need 'em till you need 'em
4. ashtray CB
5. timing advance
6. 6 CD in dash
7. Aux fuse box next to
8. Optima
9. Inverter - TV and playstation in the back make for nice road trips
10. painted flares

Worst
1. swing away rear tire carrier - looked cool, PIA to use
2. manik side steps - damn near fawked up my rockers when they bent

Jury's out - snorkel - I like it I probably saved my engine at least once, although i wouldn't have gone in there without it. Damn, I'm sick of the questions, though. I'm just gonna post a giant sign on it. IT'S A FAWKIN SNORKEL, YOU DUMB ASS.
3.
3.

1997

Best cheap:
1. George's LEDs
2. CDL switch
3. Hella horns
4. Upgraded headlights

Best not-cheap
1. Lift
2. Intercooler for the supercharger
3. ARB front bar

Worst
1. 4x4 Connection rock sliders (good quality, more like rock-grabbers)
2. Superwinch (crummy design)
3. TJM rear bumper (durability not equal to price)

If I had any other truck, I'd have a long list. I bought this truck because it has all the stuff most people need to add. Of course I'm still adding stuff. For lots of towing highway & off-road in deer country:

ARB bar
brake controller
100 series pads
rear air bags
aggressive, load rated 265 tires
CDL switch
50 amp power feed to the rear

Make one for me, with the real word vs the fawkin and it will be my number one mod :D

Use your imagination. One of my friend's wife told folks at the supermarket that it was a rocket launcher. She said my husband is in the Air Force and he has a special permit for it. These people believed it. A few weeks later somebody came up to me and asked me how long I had been in the Air Force. I told them I wasn't. They asked how I got a rocket launcher. I put a sticker of little cartoon with a snorkeler on it. Folks still didn't get it. One time after explaining what it was the person asked me where my periscope was. She couldn't figure out how I would be able to see if I was driving underwater.

I, for one, quite enjoy the "gawk factor" associated with a snorkel.
It is an eye catcher to say the least. Not a day passes where folks don't point at it and hands flash :D Animated discussions often follow.
In this age where automobiles are considered appliances, it is fun to have something "special". :) My snorkel was less than 1/10th the cost of my blower. Guess what gets noticed. :flipoff2:

Ranked in cost effective order:

Diff Breather extensions
Door LEDs from superbrightleds.com($2.50!)
George's Dome LEDs
Synthetic fluids/grease
Slee transfer skid
Sliders, also Slee
Center Diff lock switch
OME J Lift
A/C dryer protection for ARB
Slee Rear Bumper/tire carrier
Aggressive tires
Black steel wheels
C/V driveshaft (no more bad vibes)
Slotted(not drilled) DBA rotors
Heavy duty rear control arms
ARB Front Bar
Winch (used only 1 time to pull out 2 trucks)

Things I would like, and consider to be cost effective, though my wife does not agree:

4.88 gears
More lift
35/37 inch MTRs
Slee leading arms
Heavy duty tie rod/drag link
Aluminum Roof Rack
More $$$ to finish building truck and start on my 60

First: Not impressed with Georges Dome LED, perhaps because its retroed into a 55 dome. Nice touch but I don't think its any brighter than the old one.

Where I live best mod:
Vintage Air AC!!! Nothing like cruising in the cool
Dynamat everything--keeps road noise down

I am broke so the big mods are all on the wish list :D

SORRY...forgot I am not yet part of the 80 club....you all wouldn't understand not having factory AC!!!!

That reminds me: :)

The other day I was working on the wiring for my additional backup lamp that is mounted to my Slee rear tire carrier. My wife wandered out and asked me when I would be finished. I replied and said that It would be about another 30 minutes or so. ::)

She then said..... "No, I mean with the car".

I had no answer for her. :-\

I know what you mean. We finally sold the 91 last night so to my wife's delight I'm back to just one 80. Feeling depressed about it, I began searching Autotrader classics for a 40. My wife busted me, not a pretty sight. I'm currently in negotiations with her regarding how much of the 91 proceeds can be allocated to mods for my 94. ;)

>First: Not impressed with Georges Dome LED, perhaps because >its retroed into a 55 dome. Nice touch but I don't think its any >brighter than the old one.

Dan Rohweder-I gotta bust you on this one. I think you missed a major point. I don't think George's domes are necessarily brighter (though they are) but you can leave your doors open with the interior lights on and not run down the battery. This is a big advantage when camping out in the boonies. A very cost effective mod in my opinion.

I agree with Cruiserdrew. The big thing with the LED's is the small draw. My truck is frequently used for things other than just wheeling, and using other lights for long periods of time, or if my wife forgets to turn something off can make a big difference.

Plus to me, these lights are more pure light.

This was one of the most cost effective mods ever made on my truck, which is why I have it so high on my list. My list incorporates cost into the ordering.

BTW, everyone keep posting up their mods please. And remember this is BIGGEST BANG FOR THE BUCK

This has been added as a FAQ.

BIGGEST BANG FOR THE BUCK

-Removal of factory running boards. (better looks, improved clearance on sides) cost = $0
-Removal of rocker panel plug. (allows water to escape, reduced risk of rust in rockers) cost = $0
-Pin7 mod (better shift points in low, etc.) cost = $0
-Removal of factory rack. (reduced risk of rust @ bolt holes, better clearance up top for a real rack) cost = $0
-Removal of factory sunroof deflector (reduces leaks, less water in rockers) cost = $0
-Removal of Manik grill & tail light guards. (reduces exposure to body damage @ impact) cost = $0

those are all the free ones I can think of..

Well I will chime in,
as to the best.
1. bottie fab square tube and expanded steel roof rack basket, had the crossbars and 25 in steel later voila!!
2. black steel rims. 25 a peice and in 15x8 could use the 33x12.50 tires.
3. OME suspension lift. this was free for me as I stole it off my first 91 and rolling and totalling it.
4. arb bull bar. love the clearance on the front and dang it just looks cool.
5. custom dents and tree scratches all free and makes it look mo better to me!!
Worst.
1. paying some guy to detail it for me. this would have been cool but then I went to moab and all the red dust got stuck in all of the treated leather and vinyl and was a paint to clean. now if the vacuum wont get it out it stays on.
thats all for now.
Dave

Either I'm getting old, or my cars are getting better, because the LC has the least mods of any car I have ever owned.

In Order of Benefit:

1) HIR Bulbs and Wiring Harness (I like to seek where I am going)
2) Eclipse Front and Rear Speakers (So much better than Stock I'm not even kidding. They are good enought to keep this guy with a $10,000 home stereo happy).
3) BFG 265/75/16- At the time I was afraid to go 285 and kill the power and gas economy (what economy?), they work well and helped the handling.
4) Bilstein Shocks- Added a nice bit of dampining.
5) OME 861/862 Springs- much better than the overly soft stock rear springs.

Worst Mods:

1) Tearing off the fender flair when I pinched the left rear mudflap between the tire and a rock backing down a trail.
2) Giving my Wife the keys to drive. Now she, the baby and the 100 pound german shepard drive it, and I am stuck with her BMW. Life could be worse, but she won't let me put firmer springs and shocks on the BMW.

Cary

Because I own an 80, here are all the mods I didn't do because they came on it from the factory:

Diff breathers
Room for 33" tires
Low ratio low range
Transmission cooler
Oil cooler
Double oil pan for steep angles
Full floating rear axle
Dust separating air cleaner
Greasable drive shafts

:D

Best mods:

Upgraded headlamps
Hella foglamps
AirLift rear air springs
Tweak brake proportioning valve
Synthetics throughout
Winter specific tires/rims
Hella Map light
Hella rear FF worklamp
Rubber driver's floormat
LifeHammer
Hella SuperTone horns
3M headlamp protectors

Jury's still out:

Driver's seat sheepskin
