since its getting to be summer, and the cruiser will be going places that a locked 4H will be useful...and i'm broke i've decided to make my own CDL switch. i've looked at the wiring diagram and i shouldn't be hard, actually its so simple i'm just going to save the 50 bucks and forgo the slick looking OEM one. my only hangup is the connector. toyota put a terminating one on there with pins 7 and 10 jumped, does anyone know if pin 8 on the terminal actually goes thru or is it dead? i just want to figure it out before i get stuck trying to find a connector while my dash is torn apart...again....

if you maen on the terminating connector IIRC all the pin slots are open. if you really need to know I can try to find mine tomorrow.

I thought I read about using the Hazard Lights switch for this in a pinch.

I found it here.

Requires removing a small tab on the cdl plug. This might be a low cost option for you. How often does that hazard switch get used anyway?

you can use the ECT switch as well. I think they are 7 bucks.

Not to hijack this thread but can you tell me this.....I have a 1993 fzj80 with lockers and I wanted to put in the center diff lock button, so is it prewired for it in the dash behind one of those empyt slots?? I have never even looked behind them yet, so just wondering. Thanks, Chans

I believe that the one you need is different, rounded edge.

it was pre-wired on my 96, I am pretty sure it is on all 93-97 FZJ-80's, the 91-92 FJ-80's had the switch installed stock.

after you get the CDL in do the pin 7 mod,

My Son's 95 was prewired, but the switch is rounded, different dash i believe.

Kind of like seatbelts. Not used often but when you need them they are sure nice to have.

thanks...so the ECT switch under 10 bucks but the CDL switch is 50??? makes no sense, i'll go down to my dealer and see if i can get either another ECT or hazard switch and modify them to work. that should give it a cleaner look. thanks again!

My truck = 1993 OE/locked

Not sure of the part # or if it’s any different, but the one I ordered from CDan popped right into my dash. Yes the plug was just waiting for the switch behind the dash. I was able to fish it out w/o pulling the dash. Easy. Nice having the center dif locked in high. Just the other night after fixing my intake hose, I locked up the CDL and took some victory laps around the outside of the privet airport my shop is next too. Drifts better in the corners with the CDL on! (Rain soaked dirt access road) [/hijack=yeti-cruiser's thread]

Yeti-cruiser: Good luck with the home CDL switch. I am sure a number of people would love to hear what you come up with!

yeti, the 91-94 have the same dash and the standard issue cdl switch from a 91 or 92 will fit your 94. Go to a wreckers yard if you want to save the dough. Also, I believe you will find a new CDL dash switch for a 94 is less than $50.

well, i couldn't find any wrecked FJ-80s around so i went ahead and made my own. turned out the lower rectangle holes by the rear heater switch in the '94s dash are the standard size (.830" x 1.450") for a large appliance rocker switch. i did have to round off the corners to make it fit flush. then all i did was splice into the old harness and ran the wires down to the switch. i left the harness intact in case i ever find a cheap OEM switch. i would put a pic in...but its just a black rocker switch, like the rear heater control. you don't really see it unless your looking for it, so i didn't end up with an eyesore. i'm going to print out a sticker that looks like the CDL symbol and be done with it. total cost: 7.25 and an extra 30 minutes of work. one last question, the ECU wan't let the CDL engage at speed, right? because its only a matter of time before someone tries to turn on the rear heat and hits the wrong switch.

The ECU will let the CDL engage at speed. The F&R diff lock ECU won't engage those locks above ~5mph.

ok, so it can engage...wouldn't that be really bad say driving down the highway? even if i had the swtich in the stock location it would be next to the rear defogger, an easy mistake to push it.

how about one of the fighter pilot toggle switches were you have to flip up that red plastic protector :) Also, did you get an illuminated switch?
