Wondering if this amount of play is normal transfer case on neutral tranny in neutral rear end jacked up

how much play?
rotational?
or
up and down?

Is it rotational play or a wobble?

You have to download a video to you tube, then you can post it from there.

If it's rotational. There's usually a fair amount of play. Lash in the gears. Slop in the splines.

Radial movement of the pinion is not good though. That should be very minimal

If you’ve never looked inside your rear end, you should. You can see almost everything once the cover is off.

What is everything?
1. Backlash between the pinion and ring gear
2. Small spider gears hopping up and down before pushing on the side gears
3. Possible movement of the center pin in the carrier
4. Movement of side gears before axleshaft responds (worn axleshaft splines)

And with another couple of minutes, you can pull the center pin to see if it’s galled.

FWIW, I stock a full line of replacement parts.😊

Check pinion yoke for up/down, left/right, should be 100% tight. Is it a stock open diff ?
How far does it rotate before it picks up the spiders when you stop and go the other way ? If it is more than from 12 oclock to say 1 oclock before you feel it pick up the other way best thing is to pop the cover and watch the gears so you can see if the play is gear related, I have found under normal use the thrust washers behind the spider & side gears wear & the cross shaft wears inside a stock open carrier.

I bet mine has that much play but it doesn't clunk like that. Sounds to me like it ran dry or with wrong oil in the pumpkin.

It sounds REALLY dry. It sounds SO dry, I wouldn't be surprised if your ring gear has a mirror finish on it.☹️
