I think we can all thank @abqcruiser for this idea after he showed us the awesome scenery he encountered on a camping trip earlier this year when he took his Pig out on her maiden voyage: New Mexico Pig Build

In that thread we started the idea of a gathering of sorts. @abqcruiser was tromping around Rico, CO, in southwestern CO. Not exactly a convenient location, but I think that might be what made it so special looking.

We got as far as thinking about a date in mid-June for the gathering, and never really took it any further. Father's Day, 2017 is June 18th. We could either pick that weekend specifically b/c of Father's Day, or we could steer around that weekend in case there are any dads here who would have pre-existing obligations that weekend.

I don't bring much to the table other than a willingness to start a thread about the idea.

What say you all? Do you want to do this?

We also got as far as discussing the campground @abqcruiser stayed in; Cayton Campground. He reported they have bathrooms, RV hookups and fresh water. He also thought we could reserve 6 months in advance.

It looks like it has a total of 16 spots on their website, but Ron @scrapdaddy said he thought there were 27?

Camping at CAYTON CAMPGROUND, CO

That is about all I know about that!

Man that sounds fun. 800 mile trek for me 1 way. I guess I have 6 months to find out if the Doomer is up for the challenge.

This sounds like a lot of fun. Father's Day would be a non-starter for me unfortunately with some existing obligations. These pics of Rico look amazing. I'd love to do some exploring up there with Papa Smurf. Looks like about 460 mi from Phoenix.

How do people feel about possibly meeting in Flagstaff in May for the Overland Expo (May 12-14)?

We want to go! Plan for us is to go back to Moab for the Rising Sun event in May and then back out to this. The farther away from May is better for me, but will try to make "when ever" work. Thanks for talking this up. If this conflicts with other events, then maybe we can meet at some other event. I'm open for ideas, I'm easy and I'm retired! :)

Just want to add how beautiful ABQCRUISER's wagon is. Seeing it in the wild makes me want to pack mine up now and head out.

Nice Job Pablo! :beer::beer:

From what I can tell on the cayton campground website, they have 16 online reservation sites, and the rest are walk up sites. We actually stayed at the walk up site just to the right, on the site map, of #6 in loop A. It was a great spot with 3 areas for camping. The spots farther in are definitely better. The sites in loop B are up higher and farther from the river.

I have a good friend with a fj60 who wants to crash the party, so I say the more the merrier.

It would be great to have a 55 wallow. I'm game. I signed up for overland expo May 12 just for something to do, never been. Anything after May works. Can't do earlier.

I wonder if the department of motor vehicles would grant me tags without windows? I thought I'd be able to drive it around the block by Christmas, but not sure I can be painted and ready for a road trip.

I might just have to go open cockpit and wear a set of goggles. Snoopy style.

Amazing photos! Pardon the hijack, Does anyone know (probably by looking at the rig) what suspension setup is on that pig? Looks to be 33's, but wondering if that is an Alcan lift or OME. Looks to be at least 3". Not that I have a pig, I am always planning! LOL

Earlier this year, I took my 80 on parts of the San Juan Scenic Skyway. I'd love to return in the pig. How about we plan more of an expedition then a "meet up" at one single campground, traveling from town to town?

Silverton, Ouray, Ridgeway, Telluride etc

Animas Pass
Alpine Loop
Imogene Pass
Engineer Pass
Black Bear Pass
California Pass

You can camp anywhere in the San Juan National Forest, it does not have to be at a campground.
You can also travel from town to town on old mountain passes ending up in a new mountain town each evening, if you preferred not to camp. (Hotels + restaurants)

Thoughts?

Oh yeah, I'd be up for an expedition style too. What do you think the time requirement would be? That sounds like an amazing trip.
