I'm interested in seeing what people do for Maxtrax (or other traction board) mounting on your vehicles.

I purchased a set of the Maxtrax mounting posts when I ordered my boards, but I haven't decided how to mount them. The simplest option seems to be drilling holes in the stock rack crossbars and bolt them on. It'd be great to have a solution that would let me remove the mounts easily. I don't plan to have the boards installed all the time, only when I'm exploring or camping, and I'd rather not have the mounts on the roof all the time. I'm not into the overland mall crawler aesthetic.

I bought this and while I was waiting for it I decided to get the Slee rear bumper which has a mount built into the tire carrier

The option in the link at least allows you to remove it fairly easy

Rototrax. Yakima bar clamp. Rotopax handles and a coupler nut.
Should work for pretty much any trax

Thank you.

I think @mcgaskins mounted the MaxTrax pins directly through the OEM crossbars.

Very creative! I am also a multi-stock-bar fan. I am also impressed with your other mounting solution in red on the other side; awning?
Yes, 1/2" carriage bolts in the track and some angle iron for the brackets. Rhino rack batwing regular size.

Yes I did a quick writeup here: Builds - mcgaskins' 2013 build thread - Palladium - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/mcgaskins-2013-build-thread-palladium.1219267/page-2#post-13247976

I'm about to do the same mod on a 3rd truck in row - it's efficient and inexpensive, and keeps them mounted low.
@mcgaskins It must've been your setup that I saw posted previously that got me thinking about just mounting to the factory rack. It definitely seems like the most straightforward and inexpensive way to go.

Since I already have the Maxtrax mounting pins and even some spare crossbars, it would be free.

How is wind noise with the Maxtrax mounting pins in place when you are running without the Maxtrax? I'll be running without them more than I will with them.

If I do this, was thinking about replacing the locknut with a wing nut so the pins can be removed when not in use. But if they are unobtrusive, maybe that is a bad idea...

I have TREDs, but same function as MaxTrax. Mine are strapped to my rack using kayak lashing straps. The Gamiviti rack has a grid under the bars, so it was easy to find a spot to secure it. The straps fit between the pegs on the board which holds it in place. The boards are fairly light, and I'm confident this would hold even in a high speed collision.

Not the greatest photo of it but it's all I have handy

Charlie - I had two Maxtrax boards mounted to the factory cross bars (using the Yakima mounts) with the Maxtrax pins and could not tell any noticeable difference in sound. They were bowed some because of the OEM cross bars.

FWIW - I later added 80/20 cross bars and the Yakima mounts would not work. Ended up getting some M8 bolts in the channels and used some spare Front Runner tie down rings to secure. I leave them on full time.

For a little more piece of mind, I added 1-2 Trident security nuts.
