Looking for a thread or pics of OEM door panels that have been modified to show exposed paint at the top of the door just below the window. Anybody got something? Thanks
Jeff

Here are a few of Marley and Goss' panels.

Someone needs to reproduce the appropriate factory door window wipers that make that possible!

I took the top metal piece off the panel by removing the staples and can attach the panel and have exposed paint. The cardboard OEM panel is fairly tender after being so old. I think it will work, was just wanting to see the final product befor I take apart everything and go beyond the point of no return. Plus the metal was rusty under the vinyl. That kinda bugs me. The foam inside was toast too.

Jason, what did you do with the hole where the lock rod comes through?

You know Toyota does, right?

Not all markets had door cards that went all the way up to the window...

I am quite sure @beno can get them for you...

I love having the metal/paint exposed above the door card, myself.

Jeff, just take the lock pull liner and install it back into the metal. It gives it a cleaner finished look than leaving it out. You can paint to match the metal as well.

Look at my Marley build thread and I have step by step on building the above panels. I use a 6mil clear plastic as the water shield, then headliner material for the backing. It is better than most auto foam out there and inexpensive at Hancock Fabrics or Joann's, etc.. You can reuse the OEM fabric if you are careful or if you are switching to vinyl, find a 4 way stretch marine vinyl.

I use 1/8" HDFB from Lowe's or HD. Lay the old card on it, trace and cut with jigsaw. Use a 1/2" and 5/16" drill bit to make the door pin holes. Finish sand the edges with sand paper. If you want and are worried about moisture, simply seal with Thompson's or similar. They make a mildew/water resistant card material but I don't have a source handy.

I love the look too. I thought they were long discontinued?

Regular OEM inner felts will still work. Takes some effort but they install and work fine.

J

I had no idea! That is great to know. Thanks!

I bought them within the past year. Installed on May 31 of this year. ;)

Nice! Thanks! Are those the felts made for the full door cards and you got them to work, like Jason indicated, or are those the felts made specifically for the not full size door cards?

I assume they are for the partial door card, but double check with Onur on that. Either way they work beautifully for that purpose.

Cool, thanks. I'll check with him.

How has the paint help up over time above the door card? Ever wish it was still vinyl?
And did you go exposed metal all the way back? I'd like to see how you treated the headliner to metal transition on the C pillars

I don't know yet. Just painted it last fall, and haven't driven the truck yet. But it's well prepped, epoxy primed, then base/clear over that. I expect over the years it will slightly wear--and I'm OK with that.

The C Pillars are covered by a plastic trim piece, there's no real transition to manage. But I keep debating doing something with it, because I REALLY like the paint color on the pillars and the horizontal bar underneath the rear window. It just looks so sexy in paint.

Dan

All old cars and trucks had painted doors where your arm rested. Over many years there is wear, but not bad.

I like the look.

I wouldn't worry about the paint, 40's had the upper metal exposed, this is my 82 fj40 paint is original...hardly a mark(2 tiny chips maybe) on the paint after 34 years. Think some 70 series are still like this.

I'd love to have the same(OEM-ish) on my 60. However I am more interested in the rear doors, my lab rides in the back and likes to put his feet up on the window/door card, vinyl is starting to get brittle and worn

now the original owner(1982-2002) wore a wedding ring and hung his arm out the window alot, so there is a wear spot on the outer sheetmetal/paint just rear of the side mirror from from that
