All,
I am beginning to have some issues with engaging D and R when cold. Nothing drastic, but every now and then there is a hesitation before the gear catches. I am driving a 1990 FJ62 with 148k on the stock tranny. I am doing an ATF drain and fill this week, but have been researching other potential remedies. I keep coming across references to the Party Trick, but have not found a definitive explanation of how to perform it and what exactly the purpose is. My basic understanding is it involves shifting from Drive to Park while at speed??? This sounds terrifying. Any input on how to do this would be appreciated.

Thanks

Use the search function. Someone posted a video not too long ago performing the trick. Good luck!

I would change the fluid and adjust the kickdown cable, and do just about anything else, prior to the party trick. If all else fails, then it seems more appropriate to me (you have nothing to lose..)

do the flush first, and you probably need to check and correct the fluid level correctly afterwards a couple times. If this is a seasonal issue thats "nothing drastic" then i wouldn't worry about it. Even though it could work, you should still plan for the worse $$$.

So, turns out ATF was clean, no metal shavings....I was down 2 quarts of fluid however, no obvious leak. This appears to have been caused by a blown output shaft seal which was pushing ATF into the Transfer case....no bueno. Drained both ATF and Gear oil from Transfer case, replacing seal and refilling. Should solve the issue. I will update. Hopefully this will be helpful to someone in the future.

In the tranny....gear oil in the transfer case. ATF is a detergent and will break down the gear oil. s*** will tear up your transfer case

Yep, I was the one that posted a video performing the party trick. But if you were low on ATF, then I'm sure that was your whole issue. Performing the party trick didn't fix my issue...no worse either. I attribute mine to burnt up 2nd gear clutch packs and am getting ready to rebuild the transmission and overhaul the transfer case while I'm at it.

Ive done the "party trick" No drama no change.
