The part in question is shown below. It ought to be easy since it is proudly displayed right there on the dash of my 97 40th Edition above the passenger airbag. I have searched everywhere I can think of including the circuit diagrams and yet I cannot find anything. It looks like a light sensor to me, but then it should be shown somewhere in the parts or circuit diagrams.

I did, and yes, I found it shown as a light sensor as well as a temperature sensor, but temperature sensor did not add up to me. However, I see nothing about it being related to a Land Cruiser or given a Toyota part number or shown in any electrical diagram.

It must not be shown in the electrical wiring diagram manual I have for the 97 Land Cruiser, which I guess is OK as long as I know what it is. Do you have an actual Toyota part number for it?

AC solar sensor. Shown in the LX450 FSM. I believe the 40th anniversary edition had the same auto climate control.

Mine is a 40th anniversary edition, but that part number, 88625-32160, comes up as a thermistor, which is for temperature measurement not light sensing. This definitely looks like a light sensor and the small translucent cover also suggests a light sensor.

However, to add to my confusion, I do see in a Amayama diagram it is located where mine is, and it is listed there as a Thermistor, Cooler, but also a solar device. In the diagram provided by NeverFinis, it is clearly a light sensor. The diagram shown by Amayama is however, not for a USA spec 97 LC...

Yes, I think I am happy with the part number provided kindly by TXMeatball, and with what appears to be a naming error calling it a thermistor. I do sort of wonder why the cooling system control would want, what seems to be a photo switch, but OK, it is there.

The 97 LC EWD makes no mention whatsoever of this part in the AC system circuit. However, I have noticed a few other discrepancies with this manual, so this is just another one. It looks like the 40th Anniversary model is not in the EWD version that I have, so that might explain all of it.

Just thought of something. What I am calling a photo switch might be more than a simple on/off switch controlled by light. It might be a device that can provide a simple measurement for solar irradiance. This might then be used by the AC control system to adjust automatically the AC based on the amount of heat coming in from the sun.

I think you are overthinking it.

It is a thermistor that is directly exposed to sunlight. 50% of sunlight is infrared, which a thermistor will absorb.

It is also positioned very closely to the windshield, which will also change in temperature based on outside weather conditions.

I don't think a true photon detector would work as well in this situation.

You are probably correct. I do that from time-to-time! But why is it not in the official EWD for the 97 LC?

Did not even know there was a supplemental... I guess I need to search for that now.

The symbol shown above in the schematic is for a photodiode, which is normally used to measure light intensity. Anyway...

The 1997 Land Cruiser EWD has the same thing on page 173 (Automatic Air Conditioning circuit). There is also a Technical Service Bulletin which outlines how to test multiple A/C Sensors.

I am looking at my 1997 LC EWD Page-173 and there is no solar sensor on that page. This is weird. My AC circuit diagrams span pages 172-179 and there is no solar sensor on any of those pages. This is publication EWD282U. Can you please confirm that you are looking at the same publication?

As previously stated in post #3, post #6, and post #7, the 40th anniversary edition had the same climate control as the LX450.
The LX450 EWD is available to download from the resources section, and you will find the solar sensor on page 193 of the "automatic air conditioning" section.
While 99% of the 96/97 FZJ80 and LX450 are identical, there are some very small differences. IIRC, the climate control is the only electrical anomaly. The rest are mostly cosmetic.

So, I am going to assume that this additional climate control aspect is limited to the 40th anniversary edition and therefore, not included in the standard LC 97 EWD unless via a supplement that I do not have.

The very nice service bulletin provided kindly by ToyotaDon confirms that the part in question is a simple photodiode that conducts (low-resistivity) in light and does not conduct (high-resistivity) in low light. The cover is a dark translucent black, so likely it conducts only in bright light. I may use a light meter with mine and see at what level of light it switches.
