Spray Paint

Did I read that correctly??? You did that paint job with SPRAY CANS??? Take some closeup shops. You are providing inspiration big time. I love the color combo!

Yep! I spray painted my FJ55. I really wanted to have it professionally done but the paint shops were 6-8 months booked and i want to drive it this summer. The paint is toyota enamel loaded into spray cans and the quality paint made a huge difference. I don't have any real closeups but check out my site and you can see big photos of how it turned out.

I was quoted between $8,000 and $10,000 to get the 55 painted. I was originally planning to spend $3,000 so that came as a total shock to me. This paint job turned out perfect for what I want to do.... I don't want to show this 55 just drive it. I also think that I will be able to repair scratches and dings pretty easy with the enamel spray paint, by sanding and respraying.

Thanks!

One more question. How many spray cans did it take??

Yes, my quotes are in the same neiborhood for a 40. So I figure I can buy a nice compressor and the paint gun and equipment and still be thousands ahead! Did you buy your paint from Toyota dealer or a paint store?

To tell you the truth I didn't even keep track. I bought 30 cans of each; primer, cygnus white, and nebula green. And I have a lot of paint/primer left over maybe 12-20 cans. I have some touch up but I think I will have paint left over for touch up later. I think that a 40 would take much less especially if you aren't painting the interior.

I bought the paint from Tower Paint they loaded the paint in cans and shipped. I have been told that you can go to almost any paint shop and they will do the same, but I never found a shop that would. Tower also had all of the toyota paint on file.

Impressive. Where, exactly, did you buy the paint? Did the place yo bought it from load it into spray cans? If not, who loaded it? That's my favorite Pig color combo around...

I got the paint from http://www.towerpaint.com/ they were very friendly and helpful. This is the first car I have ever painted and they tried to give me some pointers.

That looks great! Do you have a code or number for the cygnus white that I can reference to Tower Paint? Thanks.

cool, looks like you did end up welding the rear sliders to the quarter panels? Mine has semi-held up but after dropping off a ledge a few times onto the slider it cracked some bondo so I recommend tying it into the frame somehow. The sliders though have held up great...

Here is the obstacle that was the doozie...

Yeah, I really wanted to tie them into the frame, but I had Ironpig cut the quarter panels to get rid of some rust. Since Ironpig is 60mi away I didn't double check the cut line before they did it. The quarter panel ended up not being cut in the right spot to make the bumper tie in look good. So I had them make a rocker like I did up front. I agree that welding the 2"x material to the body isn't optimal, and would love to tie it into the frame, but then you are solid mounting the frame and the body. I don't know if this is a bad idea, but it seems to me like it would be. I would love to hear from you guys on if you think making the body and frame one unit is a good/bad. The more opinions the better. This is my first project and I am positive almost everyone on this board has more experience then I do.
