And slowly making progress. I now have a clean underbody to work with.

Will be doing axle bearings in the rear end. Been wanting to do that for a while, drivers side has a slight humm...and will continue fixing as i see fit.

Great day gents and ladies...
Over the weekend I took my rear axke appart and replaced the bearings. I did not realize I did not have the seals, or rather had the wrong seals, so I did not finish the job. Placed an order a few days prior for a slide hammer, which made the work real easy. The seals are en route. Used to have a diff cover gasket but I have no idea where it's hiding, lol. Hopefully will have it back together by end of week. I have one question though, the spider gears that fell out after I took out the pin in order to release the axles, how do u get those back in? Looks like a pain in the arse. Was wondering if there is a special procedure other than spining axles to try and mesh the gears back in place.
Some pics

The axle had been put back together with a used spare, courtesy of cruiser parts out in NH. Today, for father's day, I figured I would resume work on my truck as a gift to myself. I cut the cross member gusset on the pass side so i can access the chassis at the perch, just like the drivers side. While this side is bad as well, its not as bad as the drivers side. Who am I kidding, it's just as bad..

In the pile of crap u see on the floor, u can see what appears to be dog food! That's what came out of there. Im thinking mice carted it in the chassis.
Then, I cut up a patch out of the steel I bought and proceeded to try and weld it on. That is when I realized that my welding skills suck so I started practicing.

The two bottom welds were my last two. I then ran out of welding wire...so I am going to pick some up to get some more practice done. I hope to get this thing back on the road before summer is over.

Finally got around to getting some of the chassis patched up. I laid some bird poop in the process, ha ha ha

Welding upside down withan entry level welder is very unforgiving. I mat d9 some more passes in places, but i am satisfied with the repair because of good penetration. Now i just have a little work to do on the other side and then reassembly. Pheeewww

Im not even going to fight it anymore. I am just going ro enjoy the truck once back on the road. Thats it. The mechanicals are great so....i will probably cut and patch as i go.

I'm not so sure your patch is structurally strong enough for the springs. I'm sure better than the old rusty frame..

But I think it needs some better overlapping patches. I would add a diagonal type of patch. Over the old, onto the new. I might even put some angle iron to form the corners. Your welded edges need some over laps. Grind somewhat smooth, put angle iron over, and re-weld on the angle iron.
Spring perches are normally also riveted to the steel, Did you bolt it on? I would not want to trust welds alone here maybe.. unless you are 100% sure of a strong weld. This picture is found online. It shows an angular patch. I would do a few of these.

Yes, so I made patches for the holes I cut then overlapped the large piece over. I will do another weld pass in places where it looks crappy. Other than having someone else weld for me, I can't think of another solution. I also have a spare frame that I will eventually swap over but for now, at least is better than it was before.

Quick update, truck is back together, running great, driving great....until, drum roll...the god awful damn replacement calipers that I got form autozone are ****ing dragging. Go figure. What a pain. I replaced my olds with new rebuilds from them and they are s***. I have no idea how a "brand new" product can be defective out the box. I mean it's just a couple pistons and some seals. I am so pissed, I have to replace those again. I will pull the used's I have off the parts truck and rebuild those with kits from Mr. T. Just a heads up to ppl, autozone sells junk. I wrote them a nice email. I am hoping to at least get my money back, I no longer have the old calipers, as I have turned them in as cores. I did some research after the fact and it turns out that they are selling crappily rebuilt products with inferior chinese componentry. Lesson learned...

I am presuming that the run of the mill, American discount parts stores use crappy chinese reproduction parts for their rebuilds. Note, I am still mad about my aforementioned brake issue. Regardless, I picked up some Toyota parts to rebuild my spare calipers and get my truck on the road again. Will post more pics as I make progress.

This has kind of been my running rule for awhile now with this discount part stores unless it has a trusted name like Aisin, Denso on it.
I assume it's chinese crap and will fail. The money you "save" on the cheap parts, goes away when you are having to replace with OEM and having to do the job twice.

Yes, true, and the only reason I sprang for the Autozone calipers is because the truck had been sidelined for more than a year due to a bad rear main seal and I just wanted to drive the darn thing. Funny enough, it sat an additional 6 or so months until I finally got the time to repair/ patch the frame. This December will have been two years since I parked the truck. I am thinking this weekend I'll have the new brake calipers installed and I can schedule it for an inspection.

I took the calipers off my truck this evening and took them apart. This is what I
