Thanks for the reply. That is what I am thinking also.
 
The crack doesn't look that bad to me. At least it's in an easy place to get too, i'd probably just weld it up, maybe box the frame in and add on a plate to the outside of the frame if your not comfortable with just the weld. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Not sure of your view on shackle reversal, but I would have no problem fixing that crack, and the shackle reversal would take care of beefin up the outside of the frame rail just box the inside to match your Saginaw steering:grinpimp: Just make sure you V-cut the crack and make sure it's nice and clean to get some good penatration between the crack
 
Howdy! I would grind down a little over the crack on both sides and then weld it back in, from both sides with my little cheap Chinese MIG I got at partnswap 20 years ago. Leave it pretty smooth and then you can add a litte angle/channel on the inside, out of site, to beef it up if you want. I did this on a 51 Chevy farm truck that had the Marmon-Harington 4x4 setup on it. Neat old rig. Frame was cracked out like a spyder web around the steering box. Farmer had boogered it with fence post and pipe. REally snotty. Ground all his junk off and groved the cracks on the outside enough for the weld bead to lay in. After doing almost as nice on the inside of the frame channel, I modified some channel to fit inside of the frame. Burned it in real heavy all around. Redrilled the mounting holes for the steering box, put it all back togther with some paint, and most folks can't even see the repairs. Took me a couple of weekends, but well worth it. John
 
Thanks for the input guys. Knowledge and experience, that's what I love about this board.

I am going to look at both frames and see what will work best for me. The end result will be the same no matter what, one will just be more work for myself.
 
The selling point for my 64 was the idea I wouldn't have to get caught up with any emission testing. With the SBC modification it seemed like a huge bonus. Good luck with the project:beer:
 
Yeah, smog exempt is an empty canvas on which to build.

I got a couple more hours in today removed the wiring harness, switches, instrument cluster and misc. bs from the interior. The motor maybe sold tomorrow, so trying to get a head start on removing it in the AM. As soon as I get my truck back from the shop, the tub will be going to sandblast. Then I will be deciding which frame to use.

Are these door handle pulls original? I have only seen the plastic strap type. I am not familiar with the early stuff.

I’ve got the same pulls on my 69 I did not think they were original. Maybe!

You mean to tell me snot green was not an option in 63.;p
 
I agree, handles look like a cheap add-on but pretty sure they're stock. Have em on my 73' Looking forward to following your build:cheers:
