Anyone have any first hand experience with 1st gen Chevy Volts?

We are seriously considering one. With me working from home most of the time and Andrea's commuted just 5 miles each way to the train station this thing would mean during a regular work week, even if I go into the office once or twice we would at most use 1 gallon of gas. This thing is pure electric for 40 miles and then switches to gas assist and gets around 45 mpg after that.
The cost to charge it overnigt from completely drained would be right at $1 according to some online calculators i've used with my address and current electricity prices. So it makes sense for us. Any driving I do for work outside of the office is reimbursed at .545 cents a mile anyway which means i'll most likely drive the cruiser for that stuff once I get it here.

All consumer reports show top scores in reliability and even after 10 years the first year model shows next to zero battery degradation due to how chevy designed the cooling system for the batteries. Simply put the batteries hold up a lot better than ones in the Prius or Nissan Leaf.
I don't have personal experience but have seen great long-term reviews on the 2nd gen Volt and am considering roughly the same situation as you since I rarely commute in to the office, and when I do it's about 15 miles round trip with stoplights the whole way. I could plug-in on 110v overnight and in theory never have to use gas.

The flip side of that argument for me has been since I put only 30 miles a week on my existing daily (F150), the cost of continuing running a gas car doesn't justify a change (I fill up once a month). I also routinely need the capability of a truck so an EV wouldn't fully replace the utility I need.

Dayum! I guess I know what I'm NOT making on Easter.

wonder how many dubloons they will want for it, also good to see this:

"Details on the transmission, like how many speeds it has and what engine it will be matched to, have not been revealed, but Toyota describes it as "all new, tailor-made," suggesting it won't be shared with the Z4."

I'd say hopefully they go full toyota with a touch of Yamaha but I don't think toyota has a current engine that would work.

I wanted to put this in the rant thread, but couldn't really rant about it - just another idiot :) I was there today, too funny - couldn't figure out why there were so many peeps down there at high tide..... hilarious. Made my day though because there's always some asshat on the bar in a car......but even better since it was the fancy bronco with *real* 4wd :)....cause you know, you can't get stuck with 4wd

Wow. Hope he gets charged for environmental damage as no telling what leaked out while it was under water.

Does AAA cover multi-day recoveries that require specialized airbags and divers?

Thanks! Sounds super cool and like a project I would enjoy. I'm interested, but can't think of when I could get it from you. PM me measurements and a pic or two if/when you can.

Sorry I couldn't figure out how to post pics inside a PM. Here are some pics. Will get measurements ASAP.

It is HEAVY - had to move it with my vehicle jack. Has rollers.

Supposedly a local company in Raleigh can make a new handle for them.

If no one needs, I will probably refinish and put in shop under a bench.

Yeah I'm putting new flooring down in the bedroom soon. There is a safe in the closet that dwarfs that one. Still figuring out how I'm going to move it.

I just moved out 485 lb safe with an appliance dolly by myself without too much effort. Make sure it is a true appliance dolly with the tall arms, far better leverage.
