Are the casters to move the gantry loaded or empty? Most of the ones I have seen in mfg plants are for moving it empty, and they swivel out of the way when loaded and the legs support direct to ground.

If sufficiently strong casters are sourced, then you can move the gantry when loaded. Many commercial gantry cranes are available with casters that can support the rated load.

EDIT: Reference design:
Vestil -

They can, but that link you shared states "Do not move units while loaded." Just be careful, if you get those they are for transporting the gantry unloaded.

Yeah, I know. Thanks dad :flipoff2:

@40LandCruising I just noticed your sig line says you (temporarily) put 15" rims on your '94. I know they're not actual 15" 80 rims, but are your front calipers still OK? Legend has it that the OEM 15's won't clear the calipers, so I'm guessing that the ones you used have a backspacing that allows it or you're running large spacers.
My 15” rims are of mystery origin and backspacing, they are the spray painted chrome bulletholes that came on the 40. They won’t even bolt on the 40, we had to get 1.5” wheel spacers to make them clear the steering arms on the 40, so when I swapped them onto the 80 I moved the spacers with them.

This is kind of a long shot, but is anyone in the market for an adjustable-height 10' span gantry crane? Reason I'm asking is because I want to build one for myself, but the steel supply places I've found only sell full lengths, meaning I'll have enough steel to produce two gantry cranes if I buy new. Would be looking to split cost of the steel, which looks like it's going to be around $1900 total.

I am using plans from this pirate thread, calcs suggest 4.5t rating with a factor of safety of ~3. I've rendered in sketchup as well.

If you're interested, reach out to me! Looking to build soon, intend to use it to break down a parts truck.

Person in the render is 5'10". This is full height of the gantry crane, a little bit over 11' depending on the casters used.

NVM, found a steel supplier in Durham that has reasonable prices, and doesn't force you to buy an entire stick to get 6' of something. J&D Recyclers in Durham. They buy and sell scrap, but also stock new steel that they sell as well.

On my way to secret squirrel training in WV, I am loving this little fridge! That’s food for 3 days.

I’m looking at buying a hi-lift jack and was wondering about suggestions. Should we go for the 60” or is a 48” good? Is extreme the way to go or the regular OK?

West Virginia? Squirrel training? Must be top secret as only Grey Squirrels go to WV voluntarily. Former WV resident, moved to follow a girl.

Recommend 60" regular. "extreme" gets you a special head end that you can attach chain to and clamp things together with, but it's not necessary.

I say this every year but it bears repeating... I love taking a '94 (OBD 1) for inspection. CEL being on is a bonus. Still doesn't compare to the 35 year old rule, though.

IMHO ‘94 is the best year for an 80.

It’s the best year because I have one

Well of course that’s part of it but besides that there’s no OBD2 just like a 95 but 93 and 94 have the school bus transmission and bigger control arms on the rear axle.

So some of you might remember that I broke down in my 60 on the way to the Meet and Greet in March. It's now June and I FINALLY got around to repairing the thing. Turns out the transfer case seal blew out and it dumped it's contents into the 4l60E... So, both were removed, disassembled, rebuilt, and returned to place. Got it back on Friday, only to have the shifter cable come undone on the ride home. Drove it back today for adjustment and I was pretty happy with how it felt.

No longer referring to it as the Plague..... in hopes that the reliability improves. :)

Love it. Acts like it wont continue to steal money from wallet and cause strife with wife lol

Armor time?!?
