Very interesting.

Yeah, what's even better is that Tesla upgraded the Powerwall - I was on the wait list for the first gen, but they never got around to me and then I bought the 100. But the second gen Powerwall is even better.

This brings Tesla full circle. We joke in Raleigh about all the Tesla's and being powered off of duke coal. Solar roof to powerwall to electric car makes sense. Will there be Solar City franchises?

Regarding the tent I bought that has a hole... 2 person, 3 season. Weighs 4lbs 12oz with poles, 10 stakes and bag. The corner pockets inside are HUGE. This thing might be totally cool.

Did anyone who bought this tent choose a waterproofer yet for the rain fly? I've been looking at various brands, but haven't chosen one yet....

I wouldn't be surprised - I think that was the main problem with the first gen powerwall - they didn't have enough contractors/installers and they wouldn't just sell me the powerwall directly. Funny on the Teslas in Raleigh - only place I have seen them was last month in San Fran - crazy how many were there, but that makes sense with the Raleigh/Durham area....

I had looked into this a while back. At that time, the model was not to franchise, but to hire contractors on as an employees. That's when I lost interest and haven't followed up at all.

The powerwalls are at a good price point vs batteries available now and actual life of batteries.

I am guessing powerwall 2 works well with solar roof. It appears what they were selling a year ago did not.

Electric bill + fuel bill + roof bill = X

You will now pay X to solar city/tesla. Pay with home equity and have a yearly tax write off for all 3 above.

I had imagined solar tiles years ago, so glad to see it becoming real. I greatly admire Elon and his direction, but must say he could use a bit of public speaking coaching (or maybe a teleprompter). I wonder if the stuff will be sold outright or be leased/ maintained by them.

Well I know the powerwalls you can purchase outright, not sure about the solar tiles.

Haven't thought about it yet. Please let us know what people like. I'll ask the folks at Great Outdoor Provision Center or Jesse Brown's when I can swing by.

Realized today after watching all the live feeds from SEMA on facebook that it has been 7 years since I went to a SEMA show.... i've been to 4 before.... going to have to go next year. @shellb you down to do it again?

Anyone else?

Id be interested in the solar tiles for my roof too. Especially if the cost was similar to traditional roofing. Even just on my southern facing roof would be nice.

Cost will be significantly more expensive initially.

The numbers being thrown around factors in $2000 a year in electricity use for 30 year and then it breaks even.

So add ~$60k to the cost of a new roof.

Well the use of electricity per household would vary.

Also it isn't 60k added onto the cost of a new roof. That price that i've seen quoted is cost of it total when you don't need a new roof. If you do need a new roof you would subtract the cost of the new roof since you are going to have to spend that money anyway on a new roof.

But add in the tax credits that will come in (and all things point to those getting bigger each year), the fact that solar adds quite a bit of value to the house, and just the fact that at this point in human development we need to cut pollution as much as possible it would make sense.

Problem is the average person doesn't have even 5k to spend on a new roof these days.

But if this moves into the same market that some solar companies are it could be a whole new board game.

Out west lots of companies install solar panels for free (if you qualify, that being the big c$ck block). They own the panels, you get free power and they charge the excess energy back to the city as power plants now have to work less. Of course this generally only happens in sunny states Cali, Nevada, New Mexica, etc....

I haven't yet seen a direct comparison that would put this against a traditional and proved solar set up.
