OME on the way - Now, which tires?

hey guys, I haven't heard anyone talk about gas mileage....

although I have given up on seeing over 14 MPG, this might be important for Stress Puppy.

I've heard some good arguments that in a given tire style, the 305 will get worse mileage than the 295 due to extra weight and wind resistance. I have seen no documented evidence on this, but it makes sense and I thought I'd throw it into the mix.

I just put the OME Heavy lift on my 93 tonight and am interested to see what it does to mileage.
I have been running with the 295 Truxus for over a year now and know what my range is....... 12-14 MPG :D
I expect that the higher vehicle, with more exposed tire will bring my mileage down another notch or two.....

----edit: I meant to say 285/75/16 tires NOT 295 tires. And I am running the 285/75/16 truxus. Sorry for the confusion!-----

load rating

I like the Bridgstone Revo's for a DD tire. Decent off road, good in the snow, and quieter than my old Michelin LTX's. In the 285/75 size, it bumps them up from the passenger series to the light truck series. That increases the load rating to a "D", which has pretty tough sidewalls to carry the weight.

This is interesting. So would one be able to tow more than 5K? What is a "D" load rating?

With stock Michelins I got over 15 MPG highway. With 305/70 I get 14.5 highway.

Towing capacity is limited by several factors, only one of which is tires.

That's pretty good!!! I seem to get about 13.5 highway and, well not so good around town. Must be something with the rig. It is stock right now (until Wednesday!!), so I guess I need to look into what could be causing the drop. 2 mpg at this level is a bunch!!!

The 295/75-16 weighs about the same as a 305/70-16. The 295 is actually worse since it has it's weight further from the wheel center.

The extra width of the 305/70-- the extra height using the 295/75. It's a wash or is so close, it's not worth mentioning. However, an almost 3/4" tire diameter difference would be the biggest issue relating to performance/mileage.

AAACH!
my bad...... I *meant* 285 not 295.....
I'm running the 285/75/16 Truxus

I was thinking about the fact that 285/75/16 is basically the same hight (~33") as the 305 tire, but that the 305 was wider/heavier

sorry for the confusion (where's the little slap icon?)

That being said.... thoughts?

Well, OME should be here tomorrow, and the Nitto Terra Grapplers should be here by Friday. And I am supposed to be out of town on Saturday. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. Guess I will have to find time to fit in replacing the shocks/springs and getting the tires on.

Thanks to all for the input!!!!!!!!!!!!!

StressPuppy, give me a call when you're ready to put it on. If I'm available I can come over and at least get in the way.

Heffe,

Will do!!! Just bought a shop press so I can do the caster correction. But I have to clean up the garage first!!! Thinking about Wednesday and/or Thursday night. PM me or give me a call and let me know when you are available.

And the "fun" begins................

Keep in mind it's a DD, so height for the wife and or other riders can be an issue.
More diameter and more width will also mean more rolling resistance=less MPG
I think a 285/75/16 will get you wherever you want to go and still look good on the truck.

I nearly broke my cheap 12 Ton press removing the caster correction bushings. I had to resort to a machine shop with a 40 Ton press. Even they had difficulties. Others have had an easier time.

I have the 285 75 16 revos on a 00 4Runner--they are the biggest I can clear. I love them--would buy them again for sure--they are great in standing water, on the highway and off road and the snow. The only thing that may annoy you is they pick up rocks like crazy.

hoser,

Was it a Harbor Freight or the like press? That is what I bought thinking that would do the trick. They had a 20 ton press for 2.5x the price!!! I'm gonna give it a shot and see what happens. Worst case, I'll go to a local installer and have them press them out and in for me.

Yes, the press was one of those Harbor Freight types. The machine shop only charged me $20 to remove the remaining 3 bushings. It cost me $35 to fix my press (fab up another, stronger bracket).

Soupy differentials seem to have a significant impact on gas mileage. How does your front differential fluid look?

Before and after pics. please on the grappler/new spring setup.
