OME on the way - Now, which tires?

I like the Bridgstone Revo's for a DD tire. Decent off road, good in the snow, and quieter than my old Michelin LTX's. In the 285/75 size, it bumps them up from the passenger series to the light truck series. That increases the load rating to a "D", which has pretty tough sidewalls to carry the weight.

Hmmm, let's see:

Bridgestone Revo at TireRack, ea: $160
Shipping per tire at TireRack, ea: $12
Nitto from Discount tire, ea., shipped: $152
Bigger tire, cheaper AND an ok from Slee: PRICELESS
:D

Looking more and more like the Nitto tires.................................

Good luck. I too am looking at 285's. I found these at a good price but who knows. Any opinions on these tires? Is there no choice but to mount with lettering out like it seems?

edit: see the blackwall option now... :whoops:
Almost all truck tires have white lettering on one side, and no color on the other, you choose which you want by how you mount it, this is the standard way it is done, at least for any truck tire I have ever owned (5 trucks).

Only place a narrow tire does better than a wider is it is less prone to hydroplaning in standing water, I have heard narrow also does better on snow (on paved roads) never driven on snow myself so that part is hear say, personally I would go for the 305's. For looks, bigger footprint and a little more traction,

You are not limited to metric sizes. A 33x12.5x16 would be close in size (little larger) that might help with the selection in some brands

I've had my BFG AT Ko's now for 43K mi. and they've still got lot's of tread left. They will ride stiffer than the marshmellow michilins, but they're a lot heavier duty tire. I've had nothing but good luck with these, however...my next tires will be more aggressive but I don't expect to get this mileage life from them. I am considering...Interco Trxus MT in a 33" tire. I've read a lot of good stuff on these tires. I'll also look at the Goodyear MTR's. You didn't say what kind of off roading conditions you get in, like Mud, or loose rocky shale, or just dry dirt and gravel? If you regularly see any mud, I would look for more open tread. I loved my last set of BFG MT's for all around trail use, but I believe they're outdated by some better designs now.
You might figure your yearly mileage and think about how often you want to replace the tires. My truck doesn't see much mileage, and it's taken 4.5 years to go 43K mi's. I'm getting tired of the tires and they're not worn out yet!
One other factor I wanted to keep in mind was if I tore up a tire on a long vacation, what were tires most towns would have or could get quickly? BFG's and Goodyears are availible almost everywhere. I still want to see some TRXUS MT's in person. Really like the looks of those tires!

From the Nitto Tire Website :

....................... Tread .......................................................... Rev/
Size................... Depth Diam.. Width.. Appr. Rims..... Max Load ..Mile
---------------- ------ ------- ------- ---------------- ----------- -----
LT285/75 R16 122Q - 16.5 - 32.68 - 11.33 - 7.5-(8.0)-9.0 - 3305@65 - 636
LT295/75 R16 123Q - 16.5 - 33.27 - 11.73 - 7.5-(8.0)-9.5 - 3415@65 - 624
LT305/70 R16 124Q - 16.5 - 32.68 - 12.4 --- 8.0-(9.0)-9.5 - 3525@65 - 636
LT315/75 R16 121Q - 16.5 - 34.49 - 12.32 - 8.0-(8.5)-10.0 - 3195@50 - 602

And from Michelin:

275/70-16 114H SL - 12 --- 31.3 ---- 11.1 --- 7-10 ---------- 2601@44 - 666

(sorry for the crudeness; gave up trying to make it readable; not sure how to do tables with the tags here...)

So, according to this, with the 285 Nitto you only gain 1.3" in height and 0.2" in width. The 305 gains the same 1.3", but also 1.3" in width (a square???). But the 295 gets over the true 33" mark at 33.27", but width is only 0.6" wider than the Michelin.

Anybody got a dart board???

I do like the look of the Nitto tire (see below), just need to find the right size.

Kidding aside, I prefer the way a 305 fills out the wheel opening as opposed to a 285.

c-dan, if the are the same height, how does it fill out the well better? I know it is wider, but looking at the side, the amount of space between tire and wheel well would be the same, wouldn't it??

What I want is a 325/70/16 and nobody makes one

I am refering to the 3/4 view. the width is more appropriate for the stance of the vehicle.

Oh, years ago I tried some Dick Cepek FC's in 345/65/16. They were BAD ASS in the looks department but the damn things were balance-proof. I had one tire with 14 OUNCES on it and it still shook the shiat out of the vehicle above 30 MPH. I took them off after about 100 miles and gave them back....:flipoff2:

OK, I have to chime in, probably coming from a different planet. Two quotes from this thread really "connected" with me because I have so "been there"...

<<I have been reading so much on this site that my wife is starting to feel abandoned. >>

My Wife refers to my time on this board as "cruiser porn" Of course, when many of you (including C-Dan) helped out with a little fire problem we had with the starter, she came to see all of you as older brothers who were looking out for their little sister.

<<Just when I think I have it figured out, you guys go and mess with my head.>>

I read some wierd stuff at work. One recent articale had to do with satisfaction after making a choice. Interesting stuff...turns out that those who did a whole lot of research were less happy with their choice than those who just made a choice and moved on. Since I agonized over the choice of tires on my fj60, and am still not sure I made the right choice, I am sympathetic to the results of this survey. I guess that this research means that too much thinking gets in the way of happiness....

So, my recommendation is to buy some frikkin' tires, take your wife out into the woods for a drive, drink in the sweet smell of fresh air, tell her you love her, and BE HAPPY!

Keep in mind those width specs are for section width. I would say tread width is more important. A wide section width with a narrower tread width is probably more prone to sidewall puncture. The BFG's are more squared off than the Michelins. Furthermore, the width of the test wheel, shown in parenthesis, affects the section width. The wider the test rim, the wider the section width.

Just another note on the Nitto's. They are acutally more aggresive in person than on the pictures. When I bought them, we really wanted to get the Toyo MT's but they were not available. I wanted something more aggresive than the BFG AT and settled on the Nitto's since it was the only 18" tires we could locate. When they arrived at the shop I was really happy with the looks and the more aggresive tread.

Nitto Tire, Terra Grappler All Terrain tire,

LT295/75 R16 123Q tread dept 16.5 height 33.27 width 11.73 rim size when measured (8.0)
LT305/70 R16 124Q tread dept 16.5 height 32.68 width 12.40 rim size when measured (9.0)

Thanks for the heads up Christo; I was not even considering these. I find it interesting that the 295's are .60 inches taller then the 305's. How are these on the road, noise and ride? I am comparing them to the BFG AT KO's. I have had the BFG's KO's and have loved them. Great all around tire, but now you have me thinking. I want the best of both world good street manors and good off-road. Maybe the Nitto's are the ticket.

looked at the Grapplers too, but the 2 side plies had me pause, considering that some think the BFG AT -that has 3- has a weak side...

I am using the 295 BFG A\T's with no complaints. Quiet and they work well off-road. Did I mention quiet? The BFG's seem to outlast most Jap tires and this is most likely related to how soft the rubber compound is. Softer means better traction and faster wear. Good luck!

Good info, folks. Thanks a ton. Feel free to keep commenting.

But I would really like some input on the 295 vs 305 thing. Gain about 1/2 an inch in height, but loose some width. Is it worth it?? My guess is that you wouldn't notice the 1/2 in height, but would notice the almost 3/4" in width.

Thoughts?

Wish UPS would hurry up......... Bet I'll be up late Tuesday night fondling, uh, looking at my new OME stuff.

If reading here is "Cruiser Porn", what is having new parts in your house?? :censor:

:D

Going over a 285/75/-305/70 in height really starts to impact the drivability of a stock geared/naturally aspirated truck.

I would resist doing so unless you plan to re-gear or supercharge the truck.

Ok, I think I am sold.

Nitto 305/70-16s it is. Now to find a place that will mount and balance for a reasonable price, including stems and such.

Seems like $18-22 / tire is what I am finding around here (Richmond VA). Does that seem about right?

We are a "Toyota Tire Dealer" and we charge $10 per for mount and balance. Stems extra, no seeds available :D

I have no Idea what you guys are talkign about :flipoff2: I'll stick with the step #6's ;p
