powdercoat

powder coat turned out nice! good job!!!

Thank you very much. I learned a bunch doing it. One great thing is how it warmed up a cold shop that day.

One thing I learned was when time was up and they look good, just open up the door of the oven and turn the oven off.

The parts will cool down slowly (good thing) and you don't have to play hot potatoe with a rackfull of parts.

I keep thinking about how you did your electrical harness last year, and if you had any recommendations for things to add. So far I have added:

secret kill switch

wires for radio and speakers

extra accessory power in glovebox
accessory power on side of tool storage box
accessory power in rear (place to be determined) - likely for inverter.

wiring and relays for new IPF headlights

Any other recommendations?

Heater rebuild

I soaked the heater core in CLR and cleaned it out. Kept running water through it and shaking. What a mess in there. Finally put in Vinegar to cut through all the calcium deposits. Looked a lot better inside and out.

Bought some sheet charcoal foam, had an old can of spray adhesive, and rebuilt the heater.

heater finish

Here is what it looked like.

On the blower, I painted the case black, and found a grey smoke color at walmart for the motor. Looked nice. For the gastket for the blower, I bought some thick gasket type foam from the same company for the charcoal foam.

For the gasket from the blower motor to the blower, I found some real thick rubber that was about the same thickness and cut them to size. I found that a paint can lid was about exactly the right OD, and for the ID, I found a can of rubbing wax that was perfect.

Horn

I worked on the old horns too, I tore them down, blasted the aluminum horn part and cleaned the rest up. I tore up a paper gasket so I had to make a replacement. I read somewhere to use a cereal box, and it worked great. I used Special K, as that could be my nickname. Short bus here I come!

Just realized I did not get a picture of the finished horns. The only mistake that I feel like I did was to not test them until I was done.

I did not make the same mistake on the rear heater. I hooked the fan up to a battery and no good. Have to dig and see if another motor will fit in.

The wiring harness is about done. I am waiting for the mail to get the wires for the stereo and then I can wrap it all up. Also need to order some items from Coolerman, but waiting for his reply to a question.

I am also waiting on a package from Amazon. I could not find loose pieces of the body mounting kit, without having to wait 6 weeks. So I ended up buying a whole new set, and I will steal what I need. I will then make a list of what I steal from the new set, and order them up. That way I will have a complete set for the next project.

Unfortunately work is going to gear up soon, so all this fun will end soon.

Cheers!

I think i have a few carb cooling fans that might interchange motors? if not.. i probably have a rear heater ? Dunno I dumped a bunch of stuff on ebay to pay for the garage remodel.. I know I sold a few of those things.

I'll see if I can dig a couple of carb fans out for you when your other stuff comes in and travels your direction. worth a try? If not and your really needing the motor for a rear heater I think I can find another source if my idea doesn't work.

Thanks for the offer Erik- Wait for a few days before you start digging.

I just read an article on coolerman's page basically a quick tear down and clean up of that blower motor. Worth a try first.

Ends up older 65-71 (and 78-79) were two speed fan, as there is a resistor on the front. I need to check my late model car and see if it will interchange (or heck if it is even there)

"two speed fan" Your still talking about the rear heater fan? I've NEVER seen a 2 speed rear fan.. From my recollection heat switch is front first click, front and rear second click.
I would like more information on that if you have it. There was a resistor on the fan blower motor in the engine bay. it might have been 2 speeds.

:bounce:Good and bad news today.

I rebuilt the rear fan, and it works great. Yeah.

After reading some more MUD, I decided to powdercoat the glovebox, ashtray and the bezel around gauges.

I dug through my extra parts and all the gauge clusters I have are for late model cars, and the gauges are different. So, I either need to figure out how to adapt them, figure out other replacement gauges, or find another old cluster. Any ideas? This car did not come with the cover on the cluster, so I need to figure out if I can use a cover from late model, or if I need to find that too.

Cover on the cluster should be the same all years.. minus the ones that had the turn signals as big bulbs outside it.. I loaned my spare cluster out but think I could remember who it went to and we can use it for parts. As far as putting in newer gauges.. Are you going for a "restore" or "remodel" that is the question.. If your putting in aftermarket stuff I've looked at the kit Kickass Stuff For Your 40-Series
I actually have those small gauges in the 45 cause when i got it nothing worked.. SO.. I'll probably go with this in mine but if you need the old cluster from mine and you have a newer one to scavenge to meet my needs we can probably work something out. I'm offering to kill my dash to save yours.. and keep this thread alive till tax season! If you want me to dig out some clusters I have at the house let me know.. Your other stuff should be here today so i will have a care package for you this week.

Your options are for me to dig out some clusters at the house that I might have lying around. or pull the one out of the 45. or both.

as far as 2speed rear heater.. I honestly have not owned a truck that had a 2 speed rear heater that i've "used" the rear heater in.. Fj40 style truck that is..

I have watched that post on MUD, I think the guy is amaurer, let me see if I can find that thread....

https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-seri...ven-mechanical-gauges-into-stock-cluster.html

I may go that way. I don't want to restore to original, more just make it all work and look nice. I thought I saw a thead about how to clean up the face of the individual gauges, but can't find that. I thought Atlass had something to do that.

If I could install the gauges from the later model unit to the old one, I would. Research mode now to figure out my options.

I just ordered starlight silver powdercoat on ebay (enough to do yours too Erik), so I need to sandblast the gauge cluster, ashtray and glovebox to be ready for that fun. It recommended clearcoat powdercoat over the metallic too, so i need to figure out how to do that.

Really, I am just doing busy work until the body mount kit shows up on the front porch, and the wiring harness pieces come in. OH forgot to post that. I decided to wire in an alarm system, so doing research on what to add. Saw several postings about VIPER systems, so sent several PM's to people askind advice. If anyone has thoughts let me know.

finally catching up, picks of the horn finished, and I powdercoated all sorts of little pieces incluging these parts on the air tunnel thing-a-ma-jig.

Oh, and the pre-cleaned up rear blower fan. (now cleaned and WORKING) It appears from the wiring harness that there is an additional switch on the dash that runs the rear fan. I don't recall seeing it when I cleaned up switches, so might have to find one.

I need to take some pictures of my cluster. I got the bracket and wiring from the link above and got my guages from summit racing that saved me a few $. But they are pretty sweet and are more accurate than the stockers. The sending units all fit in the stock locations. The only thing i had a problem with was that my fuel guage crapped out. I still havnent found a cheap replacement yet.

fuel gauge is probably the sending unit. .

Kelly i'll be honest the stock gauges are dummy lights at best. I'll see what I have lying round for the face and see if I have a spare cluster. I do think I loaned one out to I think someone with KU or something in the name here on mud.. he needed the Oil pressure gauge out of it or something.

Any local powdercoaters recommended?

The seat pieces are too big to put in my oven. May fit into yours Rob, but forgot what diminsion yours is - I recall it was long enough for a bumper.

Awesome Rob. Sounds like I need to get the frames ready to go.

I got the powder in the mail today, so I am going to shoot the trim rings for dash and the rear heater.

Since it is metallic, they recommend using a clearcoat that you apply when it gets down to 150 degrees, so this will be a new one for me.

Cheers
