Mmmm Paducah Back in the days of not knowing a bit about FJ40's I broke down there and had to do a fair bit of maint at the truck stop there.. So much that they offered me a free shower. had nice flowers in the median tho!

parts and harness

Started cleaning up parts. Earlier in the year when I did the mini-swap front axle rebuild with Tornadoalleycruiser, I used MOfj40's shop to clean up the steering box also. Just pulled it apart, cleaned all grease out of it, checked it all over. So, this weekend, I put it back together, cleaned and sprayed it black over the weekend.

Also I found out on coolerman's website a clean wiring diagram that is awesome! Notes B= black not blue, L = light blue not leapord print. Also found on PDF's you can enlarge them, and it will print them out in tiles with overlap if you want. So, printed it out, used kids colored pencils to give it POP, and then used packaging tape so it will survive. VERY helpful to be able to read the wire colors and what everything is going to.

So, earlier, buddie Rob and I laid out the old harness on a 4x8 sheet of plywood. Now, I laid my new harness from EBAY over top of it, and started running it all over the place. Looks like the big area I have to add wires is the hazard switch, fan, and wipers. Other than that all is good.

Question: I am thinking about putting the stereo under the driver seat in the lockbox (toolbox) I am hoping the remote will control it. My thought is that I am not going to break up the dash, and as I want to keep the top off as much as possible, I don't want to advertise my $75 stereo is there. Speakers are going to be hidden under dash as best as possible. Will run lines to the back, but not planning on rear speakers for now.

wiring mess

pics of the progress,

And HELP. Just went through all my stuff and I am missing some of the body mounts from ENERGY SUSPENSION. I am missing one of the large ones and 2 of the small ones. I can make the mounting pads with bolts and the backers, but the big pad is the one I really need that goes in the front most point of the tub. Anyone have extras?

Thanks,

I have some you can use and see if you can replace them? Or we can dig in the FJ55 body mount kit i have and see if there is anything similar. I got the 55 kit cause the 40 kit is missing the 45 specific mounts which are the same as the 55. I think they might be red tho?

have you thought about getting a tuffy console and putting the radio in it? I dont think a remote will work if its in the tool box unless its a wired remote.

ah I see, get a mirror and put it on the dash and aim it towards the radio :p

So, I have been trying to figure out what parts I need for the wiring harness, and I emailed a MUD supporting vendor, Vintage Connections. Del, the man in charge has been an invaluabel source of inforation with suggestions and knowledge.

So, finally after corresponding I placed my order at 12:39 Central time on Monday the 20th. He mailed out on Monday afternoon USPS priority mail in California(remember this is 5 days before Christmas). Today, Dec 22nd at 2:35PM it showed up at my door. WOW. I don't know what I am more impressed with Snail mail or with Del.

I know I am impressed with parts I received. It will allow me to wire my new harness into plug ends that match the original. Plug and play baby!

small thing

As I was waiting for parts on the harness, started tearing into the small parts that I need to clean up and paint. So, I tore into the heater, pedals, etc.

I am thinking about powdercoating the heater parts mainly to check out this process for the first time.

Question? Does anyone have an extra three on the tree setup? I need the rod (with knob) that is the gearshifter on the steering column. Rod is bent, shaft is broken.

oh sheesh.. what cha need? You wanna gimme a call like sunday or so and I can dig. I think i have that as a gimme from Ed that can go your way. Will have to doublecheck. NOt positive but should have it. If not we can build you one on Rob's lathe and get you an 8ball shifter knob. Or.. You can go ahead and put the rest together now and you can have mine when I get that far.

Somehow managed to get myself under the weather for 2+ days.. Could possibly be working retail on top of the regular job and having company in town etc.. Nah.. Why would all that wear me down?
I plan on being in the garage on Sunday cause hopefully my SST to remove the crank pulley on the Matrix will arrive. i'll try to remember to take a looksie fer ya.
it's probably best that none of us on this list go work on stuff on saturday right? I think the requirement is to sit around in pj's and make a mess of the Livingroom and organize our new goodies that go on the trucks?

Looking good Kelly.. You ever figure out body mounts? Want me to look in that box? have an SOR # for reference?

Have not figured out body mounts yet, so that is just sitting there. I hate to buy a whole new kit, so dunno what I will do on that. For now, I can work on small parts and electrical harness. MOFJ40 gave me a bunch of that industrial material (i forgot the name) to make body mounts out of (white), so I could always make the missing ones, but they are much harder material then the rubber mounts and frankly the two that you will see on the front will be black on one side, white on the other. :whoops:

So, hoping someone out there has a partial kit also. I need to email a couple other energy suspension dealers, as the reply from energy suspension was to call a vendor.:hhmm:

Oh Well.

To be politically incorrect, Merry Christmas to all!
Hoping that Santa's sled jack-knifed and dropped the entire load under your tree!

"industrial material (i forgot the name) to make body mounts out of (white), "
UHMPE What the body lift on my wagon is made of. Same stuff as your cutting board in your kitchen if you have a platic one. Ultra High molecular poly etheline or something.

So what exactly do you need for a body mount.. one large and 2 small?? I can probably get you somthing for now but can't tell you for certain i won't need it. they wouldn't let you buy one piece at a time? THAT SUCKS.

That's what it is. Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene, commonly called UHMW. 2"x2"x4' sticks.

Kelly it looks like you're really making progress. I hate that I won't be around to see the finished product.

xmas work

So, over the holiday, I was able to clean up all the knobs and paint it all white as shown on mud. They turned out great. I did all the knobs I could find, so way more than I would ever need. Just decided to do them at the same time.

Last week I tore into the heater box and blower box.

powdercoat

So, I bought the used oven on C-list over a year ago, bought a plug also, the powdercoater from Harbor Freight and the powder from MSC.

They have been sitting for some time.:ban:

So, decided to do the heater and brake pedals with the powdercoat.

Pics of it. I used the racks that came with the oven, but welded little runners on each side so the rack was as close as possible to the top.
