look who came to dinner

My buddy was in town, and showed up bright and early, so he got put to work.

We strapped the engine up and got it in place. Still need to find the rear bolt for the engine mount, and dig out pictures of how the linkages go for the three on the tree, but it is coming together, which is really exciting.

This weekend have a beer trip to go on, but hopefully have Sunday to get some more time out there.

bodywork started

Here are pics of us starting the bodywork. Last week, I finished most of the interior bodywork that was needed, and engine compartment / firewall.

Today we got about 4 hours on the rear quarters and rockers. Good first coat of mud. Not looking for perfect, just looking for respectable.

three on the tree is functional in the 45 in my parents garage should you need a working reference. Congrats on gaining that garage space back! You are rockin and rolling.

What type of filler are you using?

Filler is from MSC. I think it is lightweight 3M Dynatron. I think it was $12.50 a gallon.

I need to find some final finish fine material -- it seemed a little course.

Question: I am looking to buy a 8" DA and a air file board. Anybody have a brand that I should go with, or stay away from?

Kelly, I have what I believe is some sand paper for a longboard sander.. Might have some 8" disks as well. I think my DA is 6".. I did dig out my bodywork cardboard boxes from the pile and they're in the back of the shop.

I'll have to look thru your MSC #'s you gave me. Need to make my list.. Sadly I won an ARB certificate that will probably mean I have to spend more $ yet again..

ANd.. Thank you for providing me motivation to get me rolling again.. The subtle hazing from the club wasn't enough.. Your assistance in the last year and your excitement/questions remind me of why we do this and how I was when I started. it's fun to share in anothers excitement.

Primer is laying down awesome! Flipping tub tonight. Gotta find muscle.. Will be texting Colin and or Sage to see who is free for about 15 min tonight. My paint booth in garage is working AWESOME!

Jenn is hopefully picking me us some sheetmetal today to patch the floor and prep for the new quarter panel instal. I will start a thread somewhere.

Evidently, I need more hazing, because I feel that my progress is in SLOW MOTION. I am very excited to see yours moving forward.

Oh, I have some Cub Scout popcorn for you, and the other goodies. Thanks for supporting my son's Pack.

Congrats on the primer. What a great feeling after that is down. Good luck on the flip, too.

I have lots of longboard paper, however, what 8" paper do you have? I have not bought any of that yet.

Rob-

Maybe I can make October 29 of 2011? Thanks for the offer on the tranny info.

I think there is some 8" disks in my stash. i'm probably not going to buy a sander just to use the paper I have. :)
I"ll have to look..

work work work

Well, I finally got out to the garage, and made some progress. I am skim coating all panels with mud, even cleaning up the factory weld for welded nuts on the upper edge (basically everywhere that I am not adding the bedliner. Got most of it finished yesterday. Next up blow on some blocking primer.

small parts

I also had the sandblaster out last weekend for a neighbor, so I blasted some small parts and painted. I also welded a new end on the gas tank straps that had fallen to the rust lords and painted them up.

Looking GREAT! I sadly moved to some other stuff at the house for a bit.. Had to fix ac on ford, new compressor and all that jazz.. it's fixed and on ebay now.

I have some bunny suits for you when you need. I can send em via courier :)
Looks like your about ready to seal next? then build primer? block sand and shoot? or is it build primer, sand, seal then shoot?
Seam sealer question.. you using SEM self leveling? or other?
your are or are not shooting the inside of the tub with bedliner? If not why?

Spot welds are "fun" to drill out..

Spot welds are fun. But the feeling when the part just falls off after you hit the last weld is even better.

Yes, I bought the SEM seam sealer that "3 days" post used. I also bought the gun, so I can let you borrow when you get to that point. Cost more for the gun than the product as usual.

I will scuff up stuff, shoot the epoxy primer lightly and then shoot on the building primer. I bought the harbor freight prime gun that you told me about. Anyway, let it dry overnight then block sand.

On the interior, I will just light epoxy for adhesion, then spray bedliner (raptor tintable). I will also shoot the top of the tunnel cover, the toolbox lid under the seat, and running boards.

I just ordered all the paint and raptor tint yesterday, so this week will be like christmas.

Thinking about making a paint booth like yours in the back corner of my shop. Need to move the 78 fj outside I guess for a few months.

I got the empty quart paint cans and filled them up with POR 15, so I am about ready to do the courier service. Any day this week would work for me. I have Boy Scout popcorn ( and tons more if anyone locally wants to support local scouting), buckets and tub from demo, POR 15. Am I missing anything? Seems like I am.

I'll dig out bunny suits and send em with jenn.. possibly thurs. Email me what I owe you.

Got all the bodywork done on the tub, main bud Rob stopped by and helped prep for primer, so we shot thin coat of epoxy and build primer.

Pics to come.

Now for some blocking.
