Hello all,
I'd like to run analog remote gauges during the interim process or restoring my FJ. I like drive my projects.

Anyway I have a typical 3 gauge cluster from auto zone or can get a Bosche from Advanced auto parts (maybe Bosche includes BSPT adapters?)

Basically I know the senders have British standard pipe thread so I would need adapters.
Anyone have a link for these for sale online. the usually vendors don't seem to have them surprisingly unless I'm not seeing them???

*** Who can confirm the thread and pitch of the BSPT for the block?
is it the same for the water temp sender? ***

Thank you!

Maybe you should shop with one of the vendors up top - they understand Toyota LC.
My 72 always had a funky oil pressure reading. I tried a new sensor when I got it in 82 - same issue. Back then there wasn't much internet and no real help/parts... I installed a direct read oil pressure gauge. I think the fitting came from an Aerospatiale. Anyway I made the mount to clamp on the steering column. I put fuel hose over the nylon tubing from the gauge to the engine side of the firewall - that way if the line broke I wouldn't get a face full of hot oil.

I believe it’s 1/8 bspt for the oil sender. So you’re looking for a 1/8 bspt to 1/8 npt. The manual oil gauge I got from auto meter had the adapter with the gauge fittings in the box. No need to buy any adapters.

I believe that the threaded holes in the head for the senders are NPT. AutoMeter temp gauge came with adapters
And stop calling it an FJ

usual vendors meant Cruiser corps, CCOT, Man A Fre, SOR etc not Auto zone, Advanced, Napa. Thank you - Aerospatiale. And yes I had an oil gauge line touch a header before but was only just going through the vehicle after bringing it home. oil oil all over the shop floor but only momentarily and motor wasn't hurt.

Autometer - 1/8 BSPT to 1/8 NPT confirmed.
Thank you

All tapered pipe threads in the head & block are BSPT.

The 1/2" ports in the head can be mistaken for 1/2” NPT since the thread pitch is 14 for both. 1/2" NPT sort of works and I used NPT for years before I knew better.
Take note, if buying 1/2" BSPT from Amazon or eBay, there’s a good chance you’ll get NPT when they’re calling it BSPT. Or, the threads are cut poorly, and you can’t figure out what they are because they fit poorly in either of the female threads. McMaster-Carr, good choice.

FJ FJ FJF FJ FJ - lol. Am I meant to specify FJ40 while in the 40 specific tech threads or you simply prefer 1971 Toyota Land Cruiser model FJ-40?
"40" works. Avoids confusion with the FJ cruiser. There's 43s, 45s, 47s and 55s here too

thank you - everyone says 1/8 brit standard but nothing about the pitch. thank you.

FYI, my post, 2017:

The block oil fittings on Toyota engines (as well as most Japanese engines) are NOT your standard NPT threads--they are also NOT metric threads. They are BSP (British Standard Pipe). The sender unit is a 1/8in X 28BSP. It is 1/8" in diameter with 28 threads per inch.

The 1/8in NPT fittings have 27 threads per inch. The threads on BSP versus NPT are cut with threads with a 5deg difference in angles. The depths of the threads are also different due to the shapes of the peaks and valleys. The correct male BSP fitting is also tapered. The only thing that happens to fit with an NPT fitting is the 1/8in diameter--otherwise, you might as well just drive a square peg into a round hole.

The correct 1/8in x 28BSP to 1/8in NPT adapters are available from Amsoil, Autometer, and Mcmaster-Carr. From there you can add whatever T or elbow fittings you need.

so to confirm then;
the HEAD for engine temp is 1/2" BSPT
the BLOCK for oil is 1/8" BSPT?

is that correct?

hi

the below are JIS Spec. adapters / service fittings Thread Pitch and Diameter correct for your Land cruiser , ( Japanese industrial standard ) ......

,

cylinder head coolant sensor for gauge cluster

oil galley service fitting with a OEM TOYOTA removable service plug , you can leave this in-place , with plug installed , use your BOSCH 3 pod auto zone engine bay status monitor gauge pods permanently

you cap one coolant sender union port , you order 2 new oem sensor unions , u remove plug later and do same have gauges pod 3 in engine bay

i saw this in Richard Petty Nascar as a teenager .. i have done this ALL YAZAKI 52mm gauges in a L bracket like in BOSCH KIT

FJ40 Fire wall vertical supports pass side , mounted on the inner side , you will have a all s sides view all times from front and both sides .....

you have a SOLID idea here ! make it so ,,,,,,,,:)

oh , install and hook all 3 lights bulbs , you will find out this is a MUST HAVE MUST do and Bad to the Bone 🍖 koolness too

i substitute the Volts gauges for a full sweep Vacuum Gauge , far more useful in every possible way

volts gauge .......useless ....... u can hand held volts meter it spot check if need be .....\

I’m not sure what the confusion is. Yes. Again, the oil fittings that come with your manual gauge probably have the right fitting in the box. I mentioned that above, have you checked???? You’ll have to buy the 1/2” BSPT. For the head port you can also use NPT and since most are brass it will conform to the BSPT pitch. Ran one of those for years with an auto meter temp gauge with no issues and was able to get it at Home Depot.
