Is the 4spd Knob M10x1.25
or
M10x1.5

I’m making an extension for the 3spd and using the 4spd knob.

What’s the thread also on the shift rod/stick?

Yes I looked on the forum already and yes I have a tap n die set.

Thank you

Ok so - made it to Hardware store before anyone had a reply so to confirm:

The 3spd transfer case shift rod and knob is: M8 x 1.25

The 4spd or later 70’s shift knob pictured is M12 x 1.75

Now off to the machine shop with a piece of 1/2” round stock to make the extension.

Cheers

Can't you just use an m12 bolt and tap an m8 hole into the end of it?

The M12 did not start until the 81 model (8/80) transfer case. The M8 lasted in the transfer case knob up to 8/80. The M10 was transmission shifter thread. That lasted on three and fours speed transmission in the 40 series until the end of production. 60 series transmission used the M12 on the four speed. The H55F always had the M12 even in the 40 series. I have a H42/ T case from a 82 FJ40 and H41/T case from an 84 HJ47. Both have M10 on the transmission and M12 on the transfer case.

marvelous, simply marvelous

that makes sense - I ordered the shift knob from CCOT and its the M12 genuine Toyota part.
Anyway took some 1/2" round stock to the machine shop for a 6.5" extension to be made up. the boot with cover the extension joint so should work out well because the boot I'm using has a larger Diameter hole for the shifter stick/rod anyway.

If anyone is curious about he reason for all this:
It's because the truck has a tall body lift.
that makes the shifter rod go further outboard into the side of the transhump when selecting 4LOW - so I used the boot that's designed for a CJ7 that's on the curve of the trans tunnel for a CJ. the OEM Toyota boot couldn't work without a custom retainer ring and at that point all your just working with is the vinyl boot so whats the point. and obviously because of the tall body spacers you "need" the extension.

cheers

I'm making an extension with 1/2" round stock. you need more "meat" to make the female M8 hole/sleeve. I suppose you could try your method with a lathe at home but I believe my avenue to be better piece of hardware particularly because I made a 6" extension. its a pretty quick job on the lathe. dropped it off at like 3pm and will grab it in the morning.

eBay Australia is loaded with 70 series extensions. I see one on eBay here but only a little over 4" (105MM). That's was just taking a minute to look.

Would have to verify thread but here is a 17 CM extension on eBay 363545917234

4” would have also worked - I order lots of stuff but never even thought to look online for something like that… machine shop is 10 min from the house and very simple job for them.
Always support local, and like to keeping my face semi regular at the shop. Always helps with the pricing when I need something.

I changed out the small original '77 FJ40's transfer case's shift knob for an FJ60 model. I purchase a brass shift knob reducer/adapter, M12X1.25 OD M8X1.25 ID.

Certainly nothing wrong with using local. Most of the year we are over forty miles to the closest grocery store. Rural contract mail carrier. Just closed the closet post office. No home delivery if it doesn't fit in the parcel locker it is returned to a post office seventy five miles away. No second chance delivery. Can't imagine where the closest decent machine shop would be. Before I retired I had access to a machine that was being used. I did make use of it. Those days are gone. Not worth the gas or my time for cost. There are 4" available as well.

There is a different transfer case knob for the 40 series. The one in the picture is for a 60 series. The 70 series has yet a different knob. I have all three different knobs at another location. The four transmission continued to use the same four speed knob used in the prior to 8/80. The H55F in the 40 series used the same shaped knob as 60 the insert for the pattern.

Here is the 40 series H55F knob.
